FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

I noticed today when the LAD/ATL game ended, Fox took
that audience to NYM/PHL game, with a disclaimer that
it would be on only until the TOH (7:00 ET) due to
"network commitments."

Uh, what network commitments? No NASCAR race at 7
or 8 ET--it apparently was regular prime time (Cops/AMW
at 8/7 Central) from the listings I saw.

If NYM/PHL was still in progress at 7, it would stay on
for those affiliates. Guess they didn't want to take any
"station time" away from the LAD/ATL affils. Must have
been a lot of "Colon Blow Saturday Night" infomercials
scheduled at 7/6 Central/4 Pacific. ;D

And speaking of the NYM/PHL game, Fox had McCarver
paired with Kenny Albert. What, no Joe Buck? Or is it
not important enough for Joe to show up unless it's
Yankees and Red Sox? ::)

Re: FOX to NASCAR-Phoenix:" Just a little longer"...NASCAR-Phoenix to FOX:---

Maybe FOX is committed (to their affiliates) to cover the airtime until 7PM?

All of this begs the question ...

Why did Fox have to force-feed Yankees-Red Sox to the entire country?

What are we talking about? Yanks and Sox vs. NASCAR?
You'd have a better argument if it were a playoff game between the two teams, even a game 7.

Fox had another ballgame that day, Rockies-D'Backs -- a rematch of last year's National League Championship Series. Chase Field in Phoenix has a roof so you don't have to worry about a rain delay or rainout.

Rockies-D'Backs could have aired on the entire Fox network. Instead it aired only in Colorado and Arizona DMAs.

For Fox their New York/Chicago/Los Angeles bias trumps everything. The TV networks did something similar with the NFL in the 80's and got burned bigtime.

Because they draw viewers and, most importantly, advertisers. The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry goes back 100 years. Very few other MLB matchups have such a track record - Cubs/Cardinals & Dodgers/Giants being about it.

Neither the Rockies nor the D'backs have a nationwide following. The teams are still comparitively new (1993 & 1998 respectively), and Denver and Phoenix are smaller (by pro sports standards) markets. There are very few MLB teams that draw big ratings nationally since baseball is mostly a regional sport, unlike the NFL.

Guess where many of the corporate advertisers and their agencies are based: NYC, LA, and Chicago. At least they're a bit better than Northeast-centric ESPN (which gives the Mets more exposure than they probably deserve). And, not even all the teams in those cities have the following that attracts a nationwide audience. The Mets, White Sox, and Angels don't draw the national audiences that the Yankees, Cubs, and Dodgers do.

Fast forward to Saturday, May 10. Regional MLB action 330..Now..iits 643 pm, the Yankees game (of course thats what we get in Tampa)...is long done..and the post game show goes on ..and on...and...wait...theres another FOX MLB regional game going on. St Louis and Milwaukee tied top 9 at 3...

Now..lets speculate on why the rest of us arent seeing this game, ..in which while the post game show was airing, featured a couple of wild plays in the 9th inning..I'm guessing much of the Midwest and Wisconsin are seeing this game.

1) We don't want to make the same mistake that happened at Phoenix
2) Its not the Yankees. Nobody cares about St Louis and Milwaukee.
