Nearly four years since Free Talk Live last aired live in its hometown of Sarasota, 970 WFLA has decided to bring us back to the Bay area. We'll be live from 7-9p Saturdays, starting 5/31.
I've heard this show a couple times and it's good. I like how the hosts don't talk in phony radio voices.
I noticed the show is free too, so I shot off an email to a PD at Clear Channel here in Sherman Oaks. They run some talk channels on XM Radio. They basically don't have a budget to acquire shows so they either only pick up shows within Clear Channel/Premiere, which don't have to be compensated, or pick up shows that are free or buy time on the channels. Some of the outsider shows they play are Sally Jesse Raphael, Bruce Williams, Dave Ramsey, Animal Radio (a pet talk show), The Bald Truth (a hair loss show out of LA), and Rollye James who is only on XM now.
Clear Channel runs these channels thanks to a stake in XM they have, but other than that XM doesn't pay them and they don't get a cut of the subscription revenue, hence the zero budget. Spread between three channels, it's slim pickins. You'll notice a lot of replays. In fact channel 158 contains a lot of replays from channel 165.

WFTL can say they're not West Palm Beach all they want but in the end they're a West Palm Beach station. However, having lived in Fort Lauderdale I can say their signal is heard well into Broward and parts of Dade. So market rank technicalities aside, it does have a good (daytime) signal. At night Cuba hammers it.
Not to be captain bringdown or anything. I just have a problem with how James Crystal handles their West Palm sticks and likes to promote them as Miami-Ft. Lauderdale signals. Palm Beach stations will never make it in Broward, and especially Dade.

Good move. Good show. I've heard it elsewhere in other markets on occasion.
However, landing the once-great WFLA is no big score.
In the business, the station, which once was legendary, is known as an "easy score."
Kind of like certain girls we knew at school. They gave in very easily, willingly, and didn't have much discernment or discretion, i.e. taste and class.
WFLA is like that. The station has never met a syndicated show it didn't like.
Jocks or hosts need not apply. All its programming (outside of four hours in the a.m.) is imported. Little creativity and mediocrity like Sh-t reruns and more bombastic hosts such as Limbo on the weekends.
To heck with the listeners. All we care about is money, and doing things the easy way. "They can talk with Hannity as easily as anyone here. Plus, who listens to talk radio anymore?"
