French Fry baskets and the decline of an empire

Sometimes all of R-I comes off that way. Back in my day, I hiked up a hill 3 miles and sat behind a Gates Yard board and played 45s sonny.

A - Radio is entertainment.

B - By talking about Sloan's show, he's accomplished his mission. GET THEM TO TALK ABOUT YOU! No secret, its the name of the game.

C - Radio is not dead. SHOCKER, its not dead in Cincinnati either. Most of the people on this board, and the ones who comment on the paper's blogs, are radio nerds just like us... clamoring for the days of Burbank, crazy top 40 and more.

D - Radio is entertainment.

E - Lists are stupid.

Maybe we should re-title this thread "Grumpy Old Men" :)

Perhaps our age gives us a broader perspective as to what constitutes good versus bad radio, no?!!

Some good points on both sides of this issue but I tend to agree with those who've noted that WLW is a habit. They could throw just about anything on those 50,000 watts and get decent ratings because:

1) Clear Channel has neutered the competition and owns the only other competitive AM signals in the market;
2) WLW's signal alone is enough to propel it into at least the top 5, especially without any realistic competition. This from a company that tends to push the conservative principles of free markets and competition.
3) The Reds, Bearcats, and other sports are a significant draw;
4) They have the only real radio news department in town, if you want to call it that.

None of this makes Tracy Jones, Mo Egger, or Eric Deters good air personalities. And no amount of debate here changes that. WLW is trying to get by on the cheap and everyone here knows it. WLW may be a brash, in-your-face, aggressive talk station, as DJJack1 says, but I've heard this style of radio done better in markets a lot smaller than Cincinnati. The quality of the callers alone has gone so far downhill that it merely reinforces the left's redneck stereotype of conservatives. And Tracy Jones' extreme disrespect for women is not male-oriented radio. It is childish, unprofessional, and a turnoff to not only half of WLW's potential audience, but to any man with a sense of decency.

Some of you can defend WLW all you want. I'm accepting the fact that I don't fit in anymore and I don't need WLW. That's fine. I don't patronize their advertisers either since I don't hear them much anymore. But apparently they're only interested in the beer-for-breakfast crowd anyway.

Sounds like the left does not like WLW.

I guess there is NPR and its high ratings and big profits.

+1 Keys They do serve The 50+ audience with the kind of Red Neck programming as you mentioned though. For how much longer who knows?

I was commenting on LW's aging demo which they appeal to. Not many people in the 20's listen to AM much, if at all. Advertisers would much rather have the younger audience found on other medium that now exsists.

Yeah, I have heard that about advertisers wanting only 20 somethings or however it is cut. I don't know why or even if there is validity behind that want but it sure is chanted like one of the 10 commandments.

I did not listen to AM when I was 20 something and of course I had no money either.

Sure strikes me that there is a lot of buying power out there for the WLW type listener and they sure seem to have a lot of ads for all sorts of things.

Maybe things are different than my Dad's era. I pretty much have the same interests & needs I had 20-30 years ago but I have more time and money to spend on them.

Is Sloan basically trying to be a younger version of Willie in the 9-noon slot?

I'm not sure that makes him more compatible with Mr. Cunningham. Willie is Willie, and cloning him may not lead to similar success.

I used to like Sloan when he was in the night slot, and he was funny, as he had very good conversations and interviews in that slot. He must be the best host they have now that they could put in that slot.

Really amazing that CC has allowed a full time position where the host is only on the air one day a week (except for vacation fill) 6 months out of the year.

Well, just this year, he added Extra Innings (the Reds postgame show) to his role, even though he has never called a baseball game in his life and sometimes, doesn't watch half of a game.

They did this after Paul Daugherty got fired.

My mind is not made up about Sloan but firing Doc was a good thing. He was horrible.

Of course, Lance is not much better but at least he comes across liking sports and liking the job.

Randy Michaels is a genius who saved WLW.

I don't like some of the shows on the station either but they are the number one station in town. That means people like what they're hearing.

Plus you guys are assuming that the lady criticizing Sloan was a legit caller, and with WLW you can never be TOO sure. ;-)
Legit callers? Get someone to do an investigation! Get Helen Mays on the line!

It's official, Sloan gets the gig, props to him. Personally I'd rather listen to Sex Pistols vinyl played backwards with a roofing nail, but that's just one clown's opinion. Jim Scott re-up's for mornings, let the legend continue to grow! By the way I hear that Darryl Parks likes his french fries with cajun flavoring! ;D

Larry Flint sells a ton of magazines and sex toys. Seems to make a ton of money doing it.

George Soros got rich somehow.

customers and huge profits doesn't necessarily equate greatness.

Better than the alternative especially compared to those who can not make it on their own.

Alright, so that leaves the Extra Innings spot open once again. I hear Mo Egger on tonight, and I can see him continuing that. Lance is a family man and should be home this late at night, but Mo's a younger guy, so it's easier on him. It's nice to have an actual sports guy doing the postgame instead of Sloan.

Now that just leaves the question of who will take the 9-mid slot? I doubt it'll be Deters, and WLW has until the Reds season is over to decide. I hear Matt Patrick might be up for that slot.

Matt Patrick would be PERFECT for the 9-12 midnight, slot. I listen to him in Cleveland, and when I know he is on WLW. He is FUNNY, and he is on top of things. The guy is a pro! WTAM in Cleveland is incredibly stupid not to hire him full time.
