ABC Radio Sale A Done Deal?


Sources close to the pending sale of ABC Radio tell R&R that Entercom will likely emerge as the victorious bidder for its assets. Insiders tell R&R that an official announcement regarding the sale of Disney-owned ABC Radio could come as early as today. No further details were available at press time. Disney has said that the Radio Disney and ESPN Radio assets will not be included in any divestment scenarios.

Nope. It means absolutely nothing for Houston, as there are no ABC Radio O&O's.

KMIC 1590 is an O&O. But probably no changes forthcoming there.

I thought Fox News was at KPRC. Really doubt ABC or KTRH would do anything to wreck their relationship, but it's not like KTRH doesn't have a back up plan (like going back to CBS). For most big CC news/talkers, having the network of their choice is nice but not critical.

Radio Disney is a "Brand Extension" in the twisted world of the Mouse, so it's not on the block.

As for keeping the ABC affilation at KTRH, they must have gotten a pass because they can bury it on KPRC. CC has an "exclusive" on Fox News Radio, so they've been dropping ABC & CBS elsewhere.

As for the other ABC networks that aren't named ESPN or Radio Disney, if Entercom doesn't want them, watch Viacom snap those up.

1590 is an ABC Radio O&O period...BUT because it carries Radio Disney, it's not included in the sale..but your original statement of no ABC O&Os in Houston was not correct.

There are plenty of CC stations still running ABC....KLVI to the east of Houston still does (runs FOX at times and ABC at others)

I would think Westwood One MAY snap up some...otherwise watch Jones Radio become interested in any spin offs....Possibly even Cumulus but the infrastucture for the RNs are so intertwined I doubt there will be any fragmentation.

Right, but the article states that Radio Disney properties will not be affected. KMIC-AM would be left intact and still operated by The Disney Corp.

When I think O&O, I think of more than just a racked Starguide and Audio Vault.

O&O = Owned and Operated...regardless of the programming or whether its live or sat fed..

Pretty much... Westwood is a separate publicly traded company, which is part-owned by Viacom.

Once upon a time, the sale of ABC radio assets to a company like Entercom would've affected Houston more. After all, "Mix 96" KHMX was once KAUM (and then KSRR). And remember KXYZ... In fact, at some point, ABC radio sold them off.

Any of you old-timers remember why, or at least the specific circumstances surrounding the sale(s)?

(A bit of Googling, by the way, brought me to the website of former KSRR morning man Moby, not to be confused with the musical figure of the same name ... the website of the former, who is now a Georgia-based country DJ, is http://www.mobyinthemorning.com/. Some might find "About Moby" -- http://www.mobyinthemorning.com/about.cfm -- to be interesting.)

"YEAH baby!!!!"

(Good ole Moby....a Rock DJ who was Rock-a-billy and then totally country...
last time I saw Moby, he was at the ABC Radio studios in Dallas doing his show from the old Z Rock studio and has lost a LOT of his weight...and his beard was grey...but he was still classic Moby ;)
