Front page of Sat LA Times has big article on dance music

It talks about how much dance music popularity has grown in North and South America in the last three years. DJ Tiesto concert tickets cost more than tickets for Bob Dylan and Snoop Dog. It's especially popular with 16-21 years olds and says the popularity of social networks have played a big part in it. If this keeps up, maybe it will be profitable for some station in the LA area to switch to dance music and make money.

Not necessarily enough for a full blown format, but I can see (I'd love to see) CHR's leaning dance friendly again. It would be great to have another dance revolution like in the late 80s to early 90s. The hip hop scene and culture is all but played out

CHRs already have a dance lean lately.

From KIIS-
Dev - Dancing in the Dark - dance
Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger - dance
Adele - Someone Like You
Foster the People - Pumped up Kicks
Lil Wayne - How to Love
David Guetta/Usher - Without You - dance
LMFAO - Sexy and I Know It - dance
Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat - dance
Rihanna - We Found Love - dance
Gym Class Heroes - Stereo Hearts - dance

7 out of 10 of the top played songs on KIIS-FM are dance. Just an observation.

Stereo Hearts is not dance. Too slow for the 'dance' format.
Dev, Maroon 5 & LMFAO are 'american pop songs with a dance tempo and structure.
David Guetta, Alexandra Stan & Rihanna are actual dance songs.

It's great to see all the songs on KIIS. America has come a long way in the past few years. It all started with the Guetta produced "I Got A Feeling" by BEP.

The list above aside, the huge explosion of EDM related music in the last 2 or 3 years is strongly evident at KIIS, KAMP and KPWR. Established pop, r&b and hip hop artists have either switched their sound or are working with the superstar DJs mentioned in that article. Britney Spears worked with dubstep artist Rusko on her album, Chris Brown's latest album is a lot of electropop, including a track with Benny Benassi that was a megahit in Europe. The list goes on and on. Top 40 has been rhythmic leaning for about 10 to 12 years now, but has been dance leaning for at least the past 2 years.

The noon show on KIIS plays music that wouldn't have been touched on the radio a few years ago. Its an obviously outgrowth due to hip hop's fading star- something rhythmic had to step in to fill the vacuum.

Even with this surge in popularity, though, EDM remains on the fringe. I personally love many of the acts- I'm seeing Kaskade in Vegas this weekend and Skrillex in SF in a few weeks- but its still not mainstream. I think most EDM fans are resolved to the fact that will probably never be as mainstream as hip hop- but its influence over pop, hip hop and other rhythmic music is appreciated.

Go out and find Christian B, Sweedish Egil, Joe Cervantes, Chris Cox, Alex Tostado, Tony B, Mohamed Moretta, Holly Adams, et al, and bring back Groove 103.1.

How I wish... :'(

I'm willing to bet money that another short-lived dance format will get a spin on 103.1. It's had what? Three?

Mars FM
Groove Radio
KDL

And somehow Clear Channel and KIIS will see to its demise. Again.

The great difference between when those stations were on the air and now, is that KIIS now has a much more direct competitor in KAMP. They're probably better served to protect themselves from KAMP than worry about a lowly signal that barely ever gets a 1.0 rating with any format. KIIS already serves the EDM much more handily than KAMP with their lunchtime mixes and other mix shows that KAMP doesn't bother to compete with. I've heard EDM songs on KIIS that I never thought I'd hear on terrestial radio in the past few months, so its not like they're completely ignoring the electro influence right now.

Irrelevant. The current format on 103.1 is doing better than anything in the past has (adjusted for PPM), and fits the owner's cluster sales strategy much better.

That is true. Eventhough I enjoyed Indie 103.1 a Rock, CHR or Dance format on a low power signal wont have a long lifespan. Only decent coverage area for 103.1 is Santa Monica and Orange County.

I heard of Groove Radio but never got chance to listen to it, I've heard an aircheck of their premera dia(first day in spanish) on the air which was June 20, 1996. I was 2 going on 3 years old when they debuted. I was impressed with what I've heard while listening to the aircheck. I'll start embracing Latin Orientied Deep House from the mid 90's when Power 106 was playing the genre in rotation with the WC, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre ,Notorious B.I.G., Mack 10 and The Luniz records found on the Power Playlist back 1995-96. Sorry for my essay's lol :) ;) :D ;D 8) ::).

Nah! All those DJ's are old & tired already. Sorry, we need something new & refreshing. I grew up during the 3 incarnations of Groove (Groove Radio International, Groove Radio 103.1, Groove 103.1) and honestly, only the original Groove Radio International was worth it. It was real EDM, the other two were mostly cheese, just like KDL was.

We need something similar to Dance Department which leans a little bit more towards indie EDM, but also includes mixes from the big DJ's. Also, FG DJ Radio (http://www.radiofg.com) in France is pretty good. They air cheesy stuff during the day, but at night it's bangin.

IMO, if any dance station in LA was to work, they would need to include mixshows with the big DJ's just like FG does. Just check out their program grid to get an idea.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE GRID

All the big DJ's already have syndicated shows, why not air them in LA? Here's a few shows that LA needs...

Tiesto's Club Life
David Guetta's FMIF
Afrojack's Jacked Radio
Markus Schulz' Global DJ Broadcast
Carl Cox' Global
Laidback Luke (he has one on FG Radio)
Armin Van Buueren's A State of Trance
