Why would they play #98 (from 1979), #93 (1983), #79 (1983) & others in a countdown featuring 1984 hits??

I would assume the two songs from 1983 charted late enough in that year that they overflowed into the next year.

"We Are Family", I have no clue why that is on a 1984 hit list. Was it re-released for any reason? Was it featured in a movie, like "Bohemian Rhapsody"? (Few know "500 Miles" from The Proclaimers, featured in the 1993 movie "Benny & Joon", was actually released in 1988!)

Ciao - thanks for posting the list! Interesting mix of music selections... Just wondering about the "??" on a few of the songs. Did you record the countdown and go by what you had on tape, and didn't recognize these songs? Maybe if you Google some of the lyrics of these unknown songs, you can come up with titles for these mystery hits.

As a long time listeners of Kiss, particularly from back in the day, I'm not as surprised. Some songs on the 1984 countdown hit elsewhere in 1985, probably cause Kiss broke them ahead of time. Some songs from 1983 were on here too, usually national hits that Kiss & the New York audience didnt' take to right away.

I did note Sister Sledge. What I remember about Kiss FM is when they had a "top 8 at 8" style countdown, it was a real countdown of listener requests, not some manufactured list. If Patti LabBlle was in town, you can bet that songs of hers from years past made it to the nightly countdown. So I gather this is how Sister Sledge made it on, due to listener requests. Kiss was a different station in a different era, not scared to be Kiss and not scared to be New York.

That's exactly it. I recorded the countdown, so there are some holes.

Love so many songs on this list. Jocelyn Brown, Tina Turner,Patrice Rushen,Alicia Myers,Lillo Thomas,Ollie & Jerry,Temper,Cherelle,Stacy Lattisaw,Alleem and so many more.

Patti Labelle has a few songs on the 1984 list. Will be able to see her free in Brooklyn this summer.

The music was real back then. Artists like Patrice Rushen actually had a musical background. In her case, piano. It makes a difference.

If you are going to see Patti LaBelle in concert, you're in for a real treat. I first saw her back in 1984. She is fantastic.
