Furthest Station From The East Or West Coast You Have Received???

My best transcon would be WBZ in Flagstaff, AZ in the mid-60s. During the past year, the best I've been able to do here in the Chicago area has been KNX (twice), and CKWX (several times....but not during the past few weeks). If we want to go beyond the continental U.S, it would've been WLS on the north shore of Oahu in February 1965.

Once I heard KFI from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, probably on a night when WOI (Ames, Iowa) was off the air or for some reason not there. Recently caught KOA from New York City. Both are similar distances, in the 1500-1600 mile range, but not across the continent and not as impressive as some of the other catches folks have mentioned.

May have caught CHMB (1320) from Vancouver in Iowa over the holidays, but didn't hear a station ID and can't confirm it.

DooWop,

In Western Pennsylvania, I would try for KOA on 850. I don't know how bad WKNR is in your area at night though. KSL on 1160 is another possibility. Here in Michigan, I get KSL fading up over a very strong WYLL on occasion. You're at a distance disadvantage for both stations, but maybe a not-so-strong WYLL would translate into an easier time trying to hear KSL in a very weak, but still ID'able state. They're just over 1,400 miles away for me, so you'd probably be talking a 1,700 mile catch. Not bad at all!

I'm trying for CBU (690) and CKWX (1130) from Vancouver right now. Both stations appear to have a lobe that would favor my location. So far i'm getting nothing.

Back in 1987, I heard WBZ from Park City, UT (clearly audible under KTWO). More recently, I've caught KOA from Devon, PA, a trace of CKWX from Gurnee, IL and KNX from Buffalo Grove, IL.

FWIW- I also pulled in Cuba's Radio Reloj faintly from SW Wyoming and 750 from Caracas, VE from southeastern PA.

Hmmmm...furthest east, from my eastern Ontario location, although probably not sitting on the coast you're thinking about, Radio Farda, on the Persian Gulf in the UAE.

Closer to home, along the east coast, it ranges from 740 CHCM St. Marys NL (under Toronto's CFZM), down to WSB Atlanta GA. The Cubans are always along for the party, sometimes dominating the frequency, putting stations such as WOR out to pasture from time to time.

Furthest west, an arch swinging from New Orleans through Dallas to Winnipeg (oddly enough, been further with e-skip). I did pull in 8.8 kW KVNS Brownsville TX (during critical hours) so that gets the prize. WBAP get's a special mention, because I've received it from here and Vancouver BC.

Furthest south, Venezuela & Columbia.

Fascinating because KVNS is a dependable catch almost every night in Costa Rica and WBAP shows up there about once a week or so. Those (plus KGAM Houston) are about the most dependable US-based AM signals in Central America. That you could also catch them in Canada speaks volumes as to just how far both signals travel!

From the Chicago area....

FM signals, mainly during storms, not necessarily in my area but to the south west of me allowed some AMAZING skip.

I remember 1995, on a stock Panasonic out of a 1982 Dodge I had picked up 96.5 i tracked to Houston at about 9:30am.

My most exciting reception was recently was about 2 or 3 years ago I got 93.7 WNOB from VA Beach on a stock 2000 Taurus ford radio.

Along with a line of storms in missouri, I had a full complete dial from 92.1 all the way to 106.9

I tracked them from Coumbia Missouri to Lafayette Indiana! Including Q106.1 KOQL to WAZY 96.5 crystal clear too. SKip is so fun 8) :D ;D If only TV skip still worked.................................................................

AM radio doesn't count I always got plenty of skip on there from KYW and CHOW and CHOK to WBAP. One of my favorite skips was KFQC 1580 the tiny Quad Cities urban back in 97. That station barely covered the market let alone reach chicago [lol]

BRNout,

Have you ever heard any of the Chicago 50KWs in Costa Rica?

Agreed! That's one of the reasons radio is interesting to me. I could be freezing my butt off (Yesterday's low was -30 C [- 22 F]), while someone else could be kicking back in a thatched roof hut and we could be listening in on the same station. :D

WBAP is a a semi-regular visitor here, but IDing KVNS up here was a nice surprise, as even before they kick down to their night time signal, they're listed at (only) 8.8kW daytime. 8)

What surprises me is how KVNS gets all the reports, while my local WJCC Miami Springs is hardly reported. When WJCC was WCMQ in 1997, they were the lone 1700, and reports came from all over the world. Now, nada. (BTW they are a Haitian/Creole format.)

When I stayed in Bermuda, at night I pulled in both WJCC & KVNS....the latter being my only "K" call heard there.

Y'know I don't even remember.....no Europe for sure (it was late June 2005). I know I caught 1500 DC, 1520 Buffalo, 1370 Baltimore, 750 Caracas, 1600 PR, and WAXY 790 & WFTL 850 (my locals---quite loud) and a couple of Colombians, but my main endeavor was daytime DX....I shoulda spent more time listening at night.

cd

West Coast: On an ordinary car radio in Delaware & Maryland, Denver's KOA 850 A.M.
On an ordinary car radio from Memphis, Tennessee: L.A.'s KFI 640 A.M.

East Coast: Since I'm already on the East Coast, could we just make this East Coast North America?
In that case, the French territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon (off Newfoundland) on 1375 kHz., before that station migrated to F.M. Also picked up St. Pierre from Memphis.

And on a large portable radio from a parking lot at Disney World, Florida (where I was bored on a family trip, so I resorted to DX'ing!): Duba, Saudi Arabia signing on the air on 1521 kHz. with 2000 kilowatts!

No, and I've tried a number of times. Closest I came was hearing WCKY from the Caribbean coast of CR - but I've yet to catch it inland.

That's excellent daytime DX.

@Radioman---those listed above were nighttime only except for WFTL which I heard very faintly in the day---WTAR 850 Norfolk was the loudmouth there (if any US station was), and I had to null.

OK. I'd be interested in your daytime catches too. See my "PM"

Thanks!

speaking of Chicago, when i went to West Palm in 1999 I was able to get 670 WMAQ until middle florida, then a spanish station faded in. But WBBM 780 made it all the way to South FL. Night time of course. I remember driving home listening to WBBM thru FL and GA.

And one of my most favorite urban stations from Grand Rapids, MI 1680 WJNZ (no longer) was received all the way thru KY southbound on I-65 past Nashville, and lost signal half way between Nashville and Chattanooga on I-24 southeast bound.
