Future of FM radio by Frank Foti

Crystal clear surround is swell, but if what comes out of it is crap, then what good is it?

We used to call this the "static factor" at my old college station. We wanted to be so good that people would listen to us even if it was staticy or they were outside our ideal range, they'd still listen.

This is just polishing a turd.

I don't think that anybody, including Frank, believes that Surround in itself will replace the need for compelling programming. I think that he is making the point that local FM can not afford to lag behind in tech. Satellite is already experamenting with Surround, and Surround disc playout systems are becoming more common in cars. FM is behind in programming. If it is behind in tech as well,
that would just speed the deterioration of the service.
Edited by HHH on 04/11/06 02:49 PM.

In the war against satellite, i-Pods, etc it boils down to one thing.... give the listeners compelling programming and they will listen. Period!
