FX not broadcasting in WIDESCREEN on their HD Channel, but are on the SD Channel

Please enlighten me if you know why the national FX cable channel broadcasts in WIDESCREEN on their SD channel, but in 4:3 on their HD channel ---- for the same movie at the same time....

I watch the FX network on Time Warner Cable in North Texas.

I think it odd that I can get a movie in 5.1 on their HD channel, but not in WIDESCREEN, when the same movie is presented in WIDESCREEN on their SD channel, at the same time.

I have contacted FX today through their general E-mail link on their Contact Page, so I have not yet heard back from them.

Time Warner Cable Tech support confirmed that they did not have any tech problems at Time Warner with the FX HD signal, and that they were simply broadcasting what FX was delivering to them.

Fox is weird. They show their Fox News Channel in HD on their SD channel - but with giant black vertical bars surrounding it.

As for why FX and FX HD show "the same movie at the same time"... well, that's usually how a SD/HD simulcast works... unless you were talking about the way the movie was shot.

No. no, I do understand that --many-- networks broadcast the same program on their HD and SD channels at the same time.....

What I do not understand is why the HD signal can not also be in widescreen, if the same program on their SD channel is broadcast in widescreen.

Most likely it's a technical fluke involving FX -- usually, a program taped or filmed in widescreen would be seen on the SD version either with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen (just like the movies), or be seen with the ends of the screen chopped off (if it was recorded with the "safe areas" for 4:3 implemented).
