1210 WPHT and 950 ESPN WPEN-AM. I don't get why 950 is airing the ESPN radio broadcasts of the phillies playoff games that 1210 AM is airing? Instinctively, people in this area will tune to 1210 AM for the local broadcasts of the phils, not 950.

Seriously, Julius? You don't get it? You complained incessantly about not having an ESPN affiliate that met your own qualifications for being in Philadelphia because you didn't get to hear their national play-by-play...and yet now you don't get why they're airing?

@ Julius

1) There is a chance that there are people in the city that dont like the Philly broadcasters, I am not being coy, but that could be the case for a small percentage.

2) Some people may have the dial on 950 and just not change it....

3) They promoted it so much that maybe it gave the illusion to some listeners that they where the only station that had the game.

Why can't CBS put the local broadcast on WIP when it's a day game so that Rush and Sean are on the air. I know that they had them online but, at 2pm, I was in my car and wanted to hear Rush. (The market tanking and all that) Sean doesn't bother me as much because I usually listen to him on satellite anyway because it sounds better than AM.

Entercom does this in Boston to the Red Sox. Sox are usually on WRKO, a talk station. When the Sox have a day game, they go over to WEEI, a sports station and 'RKO's sister station.

While the Phillies were on WPHT, Ike Reese was subbing for Howard Eskin on WIP. I can think of no other reason for Ike to fill in for Eskin - solo - other than a Phillies game being on their sister station. You guys are spot-on about Mr. Reese. He makes Sarah Palin sound like the Dalai Lama.

As far as the actual ESPN broadcast is concerned, I sampled some of it here in New York and was surprised - at first - to hear good ol' Michael "The Voice of the Yankees" Kay calling the game. It's clear he's taking on more and more ESPN responsibilities these days. I'm waiting for him to turn up as a substitute host on "PTI" at this rate. But at least this gig keeps him occupied in this Yankee-less October, anyways.

Without starting a new topic, I wish the Phillies radio network would sync their boadcast up with tbs's. Much like ysp does with the eagles.

I like having multiple broadcasters for the same game...in fact yesterday I was listening to the Phillies's broadcast on 1210 AM, 1440 AM and xm183; and the ESPN broadcast on 950 AM and XM186.

Can anyone explain why 1440 AM was ahead of 120 AM by ~5 seconds and ahead of xm183 by ~ 10 seconds?

More is sometimes better than Less.

What I'm trying to say is that 950 should not be airing national broadcasts of Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, sixers, owls football and basketball games since CBS radio has the local radio rights to air those games. I want 950 to air other national play by play sports but not with the local teams.

FINALLY! A good jump off point for a GREAT discussion. I find it repulsive that at least one feed cannot be synced with the TV coverage. Nothing against the TV crew, but I'd rather "turn down the sound" and "crank up Harry the K" and his crew.

Adam, I suspect 1210 may have still had its delay on (although during something like a baseball game, they shouldn't). In the case of XM, digital buffering always slows down both audio and video.

What does "sync up to the TV coverage" mean? Do you sync to TBS or TBS-HD? On Comcast, DirecTV, Dish Network, or FIOS?

With football it's even worse because you have people watching OTA, too.

Julius, At 3 pm yesterday there was only one MLB game on. Besides having Mike Miss do his show, what other programming should they have on?

While I do understand that you would have liked the other 2 games aired on WPEN. Someone at GM must have realized that most people in the Philadelphia listening area are not too interested in other games.

It has been established for many years that Philadelphians are extremely loyal to the local teams. WIP has made it their mission to not discuss national sports as there primary focus. Last time I checked WIP made loads of money (and I am sure WPEN would like to be in the same boat).

GM/WPEN is not in the business of airing something that their audience isn't going to listen to. It's simple business.

As far as I'm concerned...they should be on every AM / FM radio station across the dial. From WFIL to WNWR all the way from the educational band to FM 106.1 all broadcasting live at once!...so there.

Julius should be grateful that some station in Philadelphia - as opposed to Trenton - finally complied with his dream of becoming an ESPN Radio affiliate, and be grateful.

If WPEN was able to replace Mike "Titanic" Tirico with local hosts, Julius may be the only person in the Delaware Valley who wouldn't be satisfied.

It wasn't synched last Sunday. Although, that may have been because I was watching WCAU-DT rather than TV. Noticed this with the debate last night, as well...WTXF-DT was behind the analog.

If the Yankees play the Mets and it's on ESPN, you hear the game on 3 stations (plus the stations that bounce in on skywave)

You know what, you are right but the station needs to make some improvements to get their ratings up.
