Giants Football on WCBS-FM again this season

Dan Taylor announced this morning that Saturday night's Giant pre-season game will be heard on WCBS-FM while the Mets will be heard on WFAN. I think the Giant's contract stipulates that their games must be heard on a CBS owned station. Last season a few Met games at the end of the season were moved to WBBR while the Giants were heard on WFAN.

Makes sense - usually the Mets have nothing to play for "at the end of the season"... though, I thought the Mets' contract was ironclad with WFAN, which is why Giants games were shuttled to CBS-FM during conflicts.

I recall last August, a Monday night preseason Giants/Jets game was heard on CBS-FM.

Here's a thought: Suppose the Yankees eventually move from WCBS-AM to WFAN - let's assume CBS Radio retains the rights, first... I doubt there would be a lot of uproar over Giants games airing on CBS-FM due to the Yankees airing at the same time on WFAN - simply because the Yankees usually have something to play for "at the end of the season".

This year, the Giants may not have much to play for either. ;D

I still hope that Woody Johnson will sell the Jets, so they can be back on the same station as the Mets, where they belong.

I do remember in 2004 or 2005 late-season Met games were also on WBBR. What they did last year was nothing new.

Also, I do recall one Giants preseason game last year was on WCBS 880 (the Yankees played earlier that day). Guess that's not possible this year.

As for the Jets radio situation, I do not believe a change in ownership would effect their radio status in any way, especially how much 1050 needs the Jets (and how they have the money to keep them there). Too bad there won't be any willing FM frequencies within NYC available in the forseeable future to help with the coverage problem.

And indeed, I just got this tweet from the Giants saying tonight's preseason game will be on 880:

Giants New York Giants

GAMEDAY! #Giants vs. Bears! Kickoff: 8 PM ET, TV: ESPN/My9 RADIO: WCBS 880 AM and Coors Light Pregame Show starts at 7 RT so #nyg fans know!

Way to confuse listeners even more. I wonder how many listeners, based on the Giants preseason games that had previously aired on WCBS-FM, are going to punch up WCBS-FM by default, and then possibly give up, if they can't find the game. Are Giants fans (without Twitter) that sports-radio-contract-savvy that they'll know to tune into WCBS-AM because there is no Yankees game scheduled?

WFAN's promos for the game tell fans to tune to WCBS 880 AM for tonight's broadcast. 'FAN listeners and true Giants fans will have no trouble finding the game. :)

Thu. 9/1/11's Giants at New England (Foxboro, MA) game will also air on WCBS-FM.

Giants September games with broadcast schedules (subject to change):

Sun. 9/11/11 Giants at Washington @ 4:15pm on FOX-TV + WFAN/WCBS-FM - Giants pregame starts between 2:30-2:45pm
(Mets vs. Chicago at CitiField that evening on ESPN-TV @ 8:05pm; WFAN Mets pregame @ 7:25pm)

Mon. 9/19/11 Giants vs. St. Louis at MetLife Stadium @ 8:30pm ESPN-TV + WFAN (Mets scheduled off)

Sun. 9/25/11 Giants at Philadelphia @ 1:00pm FOX-TV + WCBS-FM - Giants pregame at 11:30am
(Mets vs. Philadelphia at Citifield at 1:10pm; WFAN Mets pregame @ 12:30pm)

##Side Note##

On Sunday 9/11/11, besides the 2 sporting events involving New York-area teams listed above:
the Yankees are playing the L.A. Angels in Anaheim, CA at 3:35pm ET - YES Network-TV + WCBS-AM
and the Jets are playing the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium at 8:20pm - NBC-TV + WEPN-AM-1050/Jets Radio Network
and U.S. Open Tennis Mens Finals at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY after 4:00pm - CBS-TV (after all 1pm CBS broadcasts of NFL games are completed)

Likely these events will have some remembrance planned for pre-, during and possibly post-event.

Wait - the tennis game isn't going to be carried on the radio? Blasphemy!

So if I understand correctly, WFAN and WCBS-FM are simulcasting the Giants game only because WFAN is going to break away for the Mets at 7:25 PM... at which time, the Giants game might actually be finished!

They could just put the 4th quarter and possible overtime of the Giants game on CBS-FM instead of the entire game. The people listening on WFAN will follow.

Any why do they put it on CBS-FM, their most successful station? Put it on Fresh 102.7 or 92.3 Now instead.

Last season in September a few Met games were moved to WBBR while the Giants were on WFAN. The Giants radio contract states that their games must be on a CBS owned station, but the Mets can move to another station especially when their September games won't have any bearing on the pennant race.

I hate football and should be on a AM station not MUSIC!!! again $$$$$$$ I know if I was driving home and in traffic, I would turn it off, really only time I do turn off wcbsfm!!! I love country so I would listen to that!!! How many more games?

Mary - I don't know the football schedule off hand. but the last Sunday game for the Mets is September 25. That is the last possible date that a Giant game will be heard on WCBS-FM. It is possible as was done last year that the Mets may move their late season meaningless games to WBBR leaving WFAN for the Giants.

It is certainly not the worst thing in the world.WCBS-FM is not being hijacked again.

Bruce

Bruce, I know that, but I HATE that sport, I just watch the movies I tape. Its prob good for the DJs they get off unless they still have to run the board.

I just heard the promo on WFAN for next Sunday's Giants' season opener. No mention was made of the game being moved to or simulcast on WCBS-FM. The remaining Mets games that overlap Giants games will probably be moved to WBBR, as was the case last season. The Mets are not in a pennant race, so IMHO that's the scenario. :)
