While this is not necessairly a radio posting, I thought it would be interesting for those who were not aware (As I wasn't until just a moment ago) that longtime WDAM-TV weathercaster/personality Jim Gibbon has retired as of early March. He had been a part of WDAM for nearly 43 years and in the broadcasting biz for six decades. He began with Laurel's WLAU radio.

I was surprised it only earned a short mention in the Hattiesburg American that day. It read:

Longtime WDAM-TV weatherman Jim Gibbon ended almost 43 years with the station and 60 years as a broadcaster on Friday.

Gibbon, who had been doing early morning weather forecasts in recent years, announced his retirement on the midday broadcast, station general manager Jim Cameron told viewers on the Friday night news program

Kinda short shrift for a longtime, well known personality.

Just saw this on wdam.com:

"WDAM and the Pine Belt lost a dear and trusted friend Wednesday night. Longtime weathercaster Jim Gibbon passed away at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel after a massive stroke. He was 76."

Fate can be so cruel.

Mississippi Broadcast Veteran Jim Gibbon: 1930 - 2007

I'm sure it is a sad day in the Pine Belt. As a child growing up in Jones County near the WDAM studios with dreams of becoming a famous radio or television personality, Jim Gibbon was one of the people I looked up to. After all, he was on or his voice was heard more than anyone else in the area.

Although I didn't know Jim personally, he was always good toward me when we would speak during my career in Pine Belt radio. I especially like Jim Cameron's commentary on Thursday remembering an old friend and collegue, as he noted that:

<i>"...JIM GIBBON WAS AN OLD SCHOOL BROADCASTER WHO WAS A CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONAL AND AN INSPIRATION AND MENTOR FOR US ALL. HE LOVED HIS JOB AND LACKED THE TOWERING EGO THAT IS SO OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH THOSE WHO CHOSE LIFE IN THE PUBLIC EYE. IN FACT HE WAS QUITE HUMBLE AND EXTREMELY HARDWORKING. HE BELIEVED IN INTEGRITY AND PRECISENESS WHEN IT CAME TO BROADCASTING..."</i>

RIP, old friend.

Jim is well known in South Mississippi and will be missed. I grew up watching Jim on WDAM and saw him as recently as a couple of months ago while in Hattiesburg. RIP
