Good Bye And Thank You To "The 10 O'Clock News On WLVI-Hello to Schlock News 7

As far as changing "Boston's CW" to "CW56", that's a good move. Not mentioning the channel number made it too generic.

How many people really watch WLVI on channel 56 though? The "Boston's CW" branding might have been plain, but it's probably the best to describe the channel's position. In fact, most CW affiliates seem to be using some form of the "(insert region/city here)'s CW"... even affiliates that were utilizing a channel number before, including WPSG/Philadelphia and WPXT/Portland.

The onscreen logos seem to change frequently... I've seen Boston's CW... The CW... New England's CW.. and just the plain CW. During the 10pm news theres no bug at all

Yet WKBD in Detroit, owned by CBS, went from "UPN Detroit" to "CW50". Maybe it's just the longevity of the numerical designation that makes it a better brand.

The lower UHFs tend to use the channel number, no matter what the network. There's still several FOX 29's and CW23's around. More than anything, I think it has to do with the impending shrinkage of the UHF band to Channels 14-51, combined with the lack of appeal of a higher channel number in branding.
