Got questions on some of the station's histories in the Upstate.

Don't know if we've ever had a topic on the histories of the various AM (and FM) stations that are now part of the Greenville-Spartanburg market, so I'd thought I'd throw this subject out and see how much of a response I can get.

First up, when was 100.5 reallocated from Spartanburg to Grey Court? They were WDXY (the FM sister to WORD) for many years.

Second, what was each market like during the 60s and 70s?

Finally, does anyone know when the market was consolidated from where Birch and Arbitron was measuring Anderson, Greenville & Spartanburg individually into one market? I want to think this was done in the late 70s or early 80s, but I'm not sure. In any case, this move killed off the AMs since none of them had full market coverage (Two possible exceptions could be WHYZ and WESC, but they were both limited to 50 kw. during the daytime only).

Any info is appreciated.

Robyn I am not as knowledgeable about GSP radio back in the 60's and 70's so I am sure somebody can help ya... Paging Ft Mill Paging Ft Mill... I am sure he can help he seem to know quite about the radio landscape from back then and Chimp come on in and give Robyn a hand here... CC1

When I hit SC in 1970 100.5 was WLBG-FM, Laurens and simucasted the daytime AM station--then signed off about 10PM. Even then, it was fairly powerful, but not 100K. They moved the license to the big city of Grey Court when they went 100K for Greenville/Spartanburg and changed to WSSL, sometime in the 80s. But I think I did hear/read somewhere that 100.5 had been in Spartanburg at one time, maybe back in the late 1940s, but I could be wrong about that.

Fortmill,

You're right about WLBG-FM. WDXY was on 100.5 when it signed on in 1947, but I wasn't sure if the station's license was turned back in to the FCC due to the slow growth of FM in that era and WLBG applied for the frequency later on, or if WDXY was sold to WLBG's owners and was allowed to be moved to Laurens.

Note: WDXY was on the air at least through the summer of 1958 according to this:

Does anyone remember what year well-known upstate radio and TV personality Monty DuPuy bought WLBG-FM 100.5 and changed the call to WGXL? It stayed this way for several years until the call was changed to WSSL in September. 1981.

I am wanting to think the COL was changed when it became WGXL. Ah, but it has been too many years and my memory is fuzzy, so any corrections will be welcome.

When I got to the market in 1984, the Greenville and Spartanburg numbers had been combined for at least 3 or 4 years. But Anderson was not part of the metro. Thus WANS and WCKN were listed below the line as out of market stations. The market jumped from about #68 or 69 to its current ranking when Anderson was added.

I don't know that much. I was able to listen from south of Charlotte in the early 80s and the Hickory area after that. I was west of Charlotte in the 70s but hadn't developed my interest in radio.
