Gotta love Youtube: Top 40 Radio In The 80s (z-100 and more)

Z-95 Milwaukee - the first clone of Z-100. Everything loved and remembered about high energy Top 40 radio in the 80s to mid 90s.

Can't talk about Z-100 without talking about Scott Shannon. Scott Shannon was already big prior to Z-100. Check out these videos of him leaving Q-105 in Tampa. ALL the major TV stations in town covered his leave for the Big Apple. He made Q-105 the highest rated station in the country, if I'm not mistaken:

The best interview though, was made just days before Scott moved to NYC, is this one:

How about the famous radio wars between Z-100 and WPLJ AND also WAPP. Interesting to note both PLJ and WAPP evolved to CHR from Rock radio.

Great stuff CHrles as usual... Like to find some airchecks of Z-95..later hot 94.7 in Chicago,, they were the hot rockin Flame Thrower too.. Z-95 gave B-96 some serious competition in the late 80s and early 90s,, even went to a Dance lean in the early 90s, but still played alot of the Rock-pop Crossovers that B-96 was too Rhythmic to play,,, used to say,, heres another song you wont here on B-96, followed by Black Crows-She talks to Angels,,, although B-96 Dayparted it, they did play Black Crows-hard to handle,, it was too big to ignore... Also like to find some airchecks like these of WOKI Knoxville, WKSF Asheville, and WBBO Greenville S.C. and the old 93.3 FLZ when they were the Power Pig.

Ive said it before, but Z-100 is the best CHR in the world,,, and pretty much layed out the sound of the high energy Top 40 of the 80s and 90s....

I like the Nostalgia and dont like stations that step on that,, thats why if I lived in NYC, I would listen to Z-100 about 70 percent of the time, and Pulse 87 the other 30 percent... I may turn to KTU or Hot 97 if a bad song came on, or an annoying AD, but I dont think I would listen to 92.3,,, not at this time anyway.

One of the best voices around...the late Len "Boom Boom" Goldberg from WMMS, Cleveland eventually was recruited to voice the "flame throwin' stuff on Z100, long after "The Flame Throwin' Buzzard" did it ('MMS I think tried being CHR at that time, '83-'84, & that was the beginning of the end for them).

I thought it was sometime around 90-91 when WMMS moved away from CHR,,, but I guess I was wrong... that was a good station too.

Hey Clubber, have you checked out the tribute site for Y-107 Nashville? It's just been launched so some questions are under construction, but they do have a STREAM  So far the stream is loaded up with April Fools type stuff. Fun, fun, fun
