indeed...i don't think any Smooth Jazz stations are playing any tracks from the herbie hancock album (shocker!). another spin of alicia keys "no one" is much more vital to the format's success after all.
 
The closest thing to real jazz I've heard on a smooth jazz station is Dave Brubeck's "Take 5". Herbie taking home a Grammy is a landmark event and should inspire some airplay, but no way will the consultants give in.
 
we don't need "real jazz"/straightahead jazz on SJ radio. We need the real songs that the audience really came to hear. We can't even get Ripps, Acoustic Alch, and Peter Whites original stuff..Seems like they could give Norah some love or Tina Turner's stunning performance.. Corrine B-Rae butchered River vocally (fortunately the arrangeent was beautiful) but SJ plays everything else she does so why not.
 
Another Cat, I've got to respectfully disagree with you on a couple of things. "Real Jazz" as you put it could figure well into the equation of SJ. Another reason why the genre is dying a slow death on radio because people like you and others who want to bury the so-called "J" word are just having a hard time with what jazz music is all about. At the end of the day jazz is and will always be syncopated improvisation of rhythms performed instrumentally with live instrumentation. We tend to forget that SJ was formed out of the foundation that jazz laid over the years. Even Miles Davis said that you have to change with the times but to blatantly erase the name of jazz will remain to me as a grounds of disrespect for those who made jazz what it is today. Herbie came from an era that was all about mainstream and straight ahead and he went through his evolution. Just flip the pages of time back to his genesis and sift through his discography. For Herbie to win album of the year in this time and age shows me that there are some people left out there that really "get it" when it comes down to what jazz is. Truly a great day for jazz music and the people that appreciate its worth. Back to the "Real Jazz" scenario, as I've mentioned in other posts if some elements of "Real Jazz" were given a ghost of a chance, then there's a possibility that some of these SJ stations would be on the air now. As for the comment you made on CB Rae, I've got to respectfully disagree with you on that note. The arrangement was excellent and Rae's vocal contributions were terrific as compared to Norah Jones and Tina Turner's performances. I disagree with you on your "butchering" comments. Maybe the "River" song isn't played because the suits may consider the song as being seasonal. Remember, a lot of radio play is given on this song during Christmas time.
