Gray to launch Arizona's Family Sports and Entertainment Network on KPHE

I forgot they moved YurView to 4 on Cox, but KPHE secured cable 13, which had been empty. They air all the newscasts except 6pm hour so they can carry two hours of "World Class Tag". The feed on Cox is not in HD—wonder if that will change at any time soon.

Don't know about what Cox is doing (no cable TV at home), but KPHE on the antenna was at 480 until today's high-school basketball championship games, when it went to 720p. I know Cox could decide to not follow the OTA signal to HD, but maybe it will have changed today.

I noticed that it was SD from the transmitter. It still was SD on Cox—that said, I think it was in SD even when the station was in HD under its last ownership. The difference between KPHE and KTVK, which were simultaneously airing the same programming, was pretty stark.

Oh, one more thing! They added a 44.2 subchannel of Fido TV, a cable channel of programming about dogs. I can't find any other broadcast carriage of it.

Gray has filed for call signs for Flagstaff 32 and Yuma 11→27...

Flag 32 will be KAZF
Yuma 11→27 will be KAZS
Were CPs ever issued for these stations? I can't find anything in CDBS for them.

KPHE will air on KOLD-TV Channel 13.5 in Tucson, as announced today. No word yet as to where or if it'll air on a subchannel of 3 or 5 in Phoenix.

So I noticed the press release for the Mercury broadcast schedule on the WNBA website has a signal coverage map that would seem to indicate that that KPHE could be on a subchannel of 3 or 5 and their translators. I guess we will find out soon since the games start on 5/25.

The CPs for both KAZS/27 Yuma and KAZF/32 Flagstaff are for 100 kW ERP. The circle for their coverage of metro Phoenix is larger than both of them. That would indicate, at least to me, that there will be a KTVK or KPHO subchannel, since KPHE/44's 15 kW ERP barely gets into most of Mesa and Gilbert without a good outside antenna. No different than the other LPTVs.

Looking at a map of the of KTVK translators, the red dots look like the locations of some, but not all of KTVK translators.

Checking out the newscast this evening, I noticed there is a new on screen logo that just says Arizona's Family Sports. I'm guessing they were testing as they are now back to the normal on screen logo as they air the Phoenix Rising game. I'm guessing they maybe shortening the name to make it simpler and removing the 44 as they launch on multiple stations throughout the state with different channel numbers soon.

Also, they have a Phoenix Mercury preseason special scheduled tonight and over the next few days at different times on KPHE and KTVK, most likely to promote the start of Mercury games broadcast next week.

The Arizona Family Sports page on AZFamily website has been updated with the new logo and list Channel 3.5 as airing select Mercury games.

Problem with that arrangement is that if/when the Suns games air on AZFS, they will need a full power subchannel (in HD nonetheless) to simulcast for those who can't pick up KPHE-LD's signal.

Apparently Channel 3.5 will now broadcast in HD starting with tonights Mercury game. Watch the Phoenix Mercury take on Dallas on Arizona’s Family
You can catch the game on Arizona’s Family Sports over the air on channel 44 or on Cox channel 13. This evening’s game will also be simulcast on channel 3.5, which is now broadcasting in HD!

Wonder if they will only have the subchannel in HD during basketball. They could easily make it low-bitrate SD except around sporting events or broadcast fewer FPS in HD at the same bitrate.

...Well, it's HD now, so I guess not. Would have made some sense, though.

How about just make 3.5 a full simulcast of Arizona's Family Sports and move the weather to streaming-only? Gray never responded back to me about even making changes to KPHE's signal to make it somewhat better.

It'd also be possible to make the weather sub still pictures only. In fact, the station that did this is also a Gray station (WKYT Lexington, Kentucky). They have two HD subs, three SD subs, and the radar sub (HD picture but stills only).
