But that makes it funnier. And I think the difference is that Fallon was never really serious with his sketch acting and couldn't keep a straight face and didn't really try.
Seems Hader's castmates (and, in last week's instance, the host) intentionally try to make Hader laugh. I'm willing to bet there was a lot of adlibbing on Martin Short's part in that 'Kate Middleton's obstetrician' sketch to both make him laugh as well as the audience. Short went a bit over the top in that sketch.
And Kenan Thompson always went a trifle over the top in the McIntosh sketches where plays a convict trying to scare delinquents played by Hader (who always laughed), Andy Samberg, and Bobby Moynihan (and the police officer played by Jason). We haven't seen that sketch in a while (which is fine).
