Great SNL with Martin Short and Paul McCartney 12/12/2012

This was my favorite episode of the year. IMO Martin Short is definitely in a Top Ten (and my Top Five) SNL cast members of all time. I still think the 84-85 10th season had a great overall cast.

Short has definitely aged but still looks youthful. While it was great to see Jackie Rogers Jr., it would have been excellent to see Ed Grimley and attorney Nathan Thurm.

Yeah, "What's Up with That?" is tired. They should've ended it when the real Lindsey Buckingham showed up. I'm also tired of "The Californians." And they've been relying too much on Stefon.

Speaking of Bill Hader, he's become the new Jimmy Fallon: laughing through his skits.

I watched this episode on-line, and frankly, I'm not sure that what I'm seeing is the actual sequence of skits, but that is another topic.

The Royal birth skit with Hader and Short was very funny. And I find Hader's crack-ups quite funny.

The rest of the show was quite average, IMO. Update especially. McCartney's solo was forgetful, again IMO.

Just watched the musical parts of the show, and I love the performance of "Cut Me Some Slack" with Paul and the 3 remaining guys from Nirvana. For the couple naysayers in this thread,... IF IT'S TOO LOUD, YOU ARE TOO OLD!

And to say,.. "He is giving them too much credibility." I say Bullsh*t!!! In my opinion, Dave Grohl is a Musical Genius. And if you think about it, his longevity in today's music really says something. The guy has been in two phenomenal bands. And "Cut Me Some Slack" is released in advance of Grohl's upcoming "Sound City" documentary, which is a retrospective on the great Los Angeles music studio. But you probably have no idea what, and how important "Sound City" was either.

And of course Courtney Love is going to piss and moan about the reunion,.. she has to somehow get her name in the news again. But she is about as relevant today as AM Radio. ;D

Well, it was the (apparent) 15-year-old in this thread who referred to "Helter Skelter" as "noise." (And on a side note, it is interesting to "hear" Paul Stanley crusading against loud music leading to hearing loss.)

Well if anyone is still talking about Dave Grohl 50 years from now, you can call me and tell me how "wrong" I was. Since Grohl has already been around for 20 years, I will cut that, and make it just 30 years from now.

On that, we can agree. But I must admit that it was hilarious when Courtney Love interrupted Kurt Loder's interview with Madonna on MTV back around 1995 or so. It showed me just how irrelevant that Madonna had become.

But I'm still not sure how anyone could call it a Nirvana "reunion" without Kurt Cobain. I thought that he was "God" to you 20-somethings.

Agreed about Grohl. Everybody forgets that what contributes to hearing loss is amplified music that is turned up too loud. It has nothing to do with whether it's hard rock or soft rock.

I remember reading years ago that Frankie Valli was suffering hearing loss from all the concerts he had done over the years, and that had to do with how loud it was turned up or his proximity to the band...unless you consider Big Girls Don't Cry to be heavy metal.

Those 20-somethings that thought Kurt Cobain was 'God' are now 40-somethings with their own teens and 20-somethings- most of whom only know Dave Grohl as the lead of the Foo Fighters, that was part of some other band too.

As to Dave Grohl being below Paul McCartney, please. McCartney has always been somewhat overrated and Grohl's music has endured just like McCartney's. It only takes one line of "simply having a wonderful Christmastime" to make most people want to vomit.

For me it's not so much him as that annoying instrumental part. And I had that mess forced on me this morning by Jeff Rollins of all people.

I think of Paul McCartney like Taylor Swift when she and Stevie nicks performed together on one of the awards shows. The man can't sing.

But sometimes he can. I actually like some of what he did with Wings, and I'm developing a taste for some Beatles material as Dial Global standards continues to subject me to it.

About the prime time Christmas special: what skits did they include? I didn't have time to watch it all, but I know for sure I had already seen Steve Martin's wishes, Martha Stewart topless (one of the most brilliant things they ever did), ----in a box and Schweddy Balls. I think I had seen the one with Alec Baldwin and elves so I skipped it.

Seeing Garrett Morris took on new meaning because of "2 Broke Girls".

The Christmas special indeed had Schweddy Balls, Martha's Topless Christmas, D--- in a Box, Alec and the elves, Steve Martin's wishes... and the sketch with Dan Aykroyd as the maker of dangerous toys... as well as one of my faves, "Christmastime for the Jews" - mainly because they lovingly replicated the Phil Spector Wall of Sound, down to the Darlene Love vocals.
At least this time they didn't have those stupid "Gilly" bumpers.

Well, again, you are going to have to wait another 30 years to make that assessment. ;D Look me up in 2043! ;D

Yeah, some of McCartney's stuff is overrated, too. The last album of NEW McCartney music that I bought was Flowers in the Dirt.

And we have the Winner of 2012's Most Uninformed and Idiotic post on most any internet board out there.

Grohl may be a fine rocker and accomplished musician, and Sir Paul may have turned out his share of pap over the years, but feel free to post when:

One of Grohls tunes are covered over 2,300 times...and I mean on actual albums by real recording artists, not by 20 somethings on YouTube living in their Moms basement....

His band sells nearly 180 million units...in the USA alone. Keep in mind, most of those were sold when you actually had to leave your Mom's basement to go to the record store, buy it and bring it home...not just download it on ITunes...

Numerous awards from Songwriting institutes and Academys, collectively with The Beatles, and individually, and collectively as among the 100 most influential people of the 20th Century.

Grohl will have his place in Rock History, As a member of two fairly popular and somewhat influential rock bands of the decade and his work as an accomplished session musician, will eventually make The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but when you put his body of work against McCartneys best efforts, son, it's not as close as you think.

I think I saw "Christmastime for the Jews" this year but I'm not really sure. Dan Aykroyd's sketch doesn't sound familiar so I surely didn't see it in the past.

Grohl, shmol. The real treat was seeing Krist Novacelic pick up a bass again! And I loved that little Bo Diddley guitar Si rPaul was playing - I want one!

They also repeated the Buble Christmas special for the third time in four weeks on Friday. I'm beginning to think that NBC thinks it is AMC or TCM. Just run the program over and over until every possible viewer sees them.

The Friday before last, NBC was scheduled to repeat the Blake Shelton special, but in the wake of the Newtown shootings, substituted the Bublé special. (and last night, they repeated both)

Yes, and that was a positive move by NBC in wake of the CT tragedy. But again this week? Well, I guess a good show deserves repeated viewings. And Buble did a good show, no doubt.

I do see some new trends here with Comcast in charge...take the best of the best and run it over and over. Probably not a bad idea considering the past few years at the National Broadcasting Company.

The Blake Shelton special was hilarious! I watched it twice! But definitely would NOT recommend it for the little kiddies! ;D (I have not seen the Buble' special, and I don't know how to get the accent mark over the "e." ;D)

I have picked up Back in the U.S. and Good Evening, New York City, but those are both live albums, albeit with some newer music on them. The wife wants Kisses on the Bottom, so I ordered that for her for Christmas.
