Great songs that were Top 40 hits that you never hear on the radio

more great songs squarehead!!!!!! What a station this could be with personality, jingles, theme weekends, music giveaways, vintage tv and movie clips,
cross promotion advertizing in newpapers, billboards, flyers and the thing is we aren't
talking a million dollar promotions budget, just do it wisely and take advantage of all avenues. There are so many smart, talented people in radio who aren't being allowed to do what they do best because corporate doensn't play to their strenghts. I don't consider myself smart or talented but I know so many good people who are who are not being allowed to do what they do best....Just My Opinion....

I heard ya there my friend, but you know we (you and I) have no real credability. We have not tried this format somewhere and made money off of it so unfortunately no station owner will even listen to our ideas. The people we work for won't either for the same reason. I'm not saying those here haven't listened to us because they have as some of the replies indicate, but we don't have the track record to prove we are right. (in the voice of Forrest Gump) "I know I'm not a smart person, but I know what radio is".

Just so you guys know...

John (Double J) was kind enough to provide the database for me..

And I just signed Musicbox 1610 on the air Sunday 9/16, using a lot of this music. I've still got to work through the database to figure out which songs I do not have. I know I don't have them all!

Now, Musicbox also plays some other music..some country, some crossover, some oldies from 1954-
on up to the late '80s..

I'll let you know how the neighborhood reacts to being able to pick up the format, even if it is only a three-mile radius.

It's hard to use just the songs mentioned, but if you add a lot of them in..it's actually enjoyable listening.
I've had it on all day..and I haven't listened to over-the-air radio for 7 years.

Good people in our business need to be praised for being good people. RFGUY is one of those people. He is one of the smartest guys I've ever known. I wish I had 10% of his talent. He is also just simply a good person.
If I had a station he would be my first hire because of his knowledge and the way he treats people. He has done it all in radio and he understands the in's and out's of this business as well as anyone I've ever met in radio.
As we do what we do we sometimes lose touch with people I have had the privledge to work with over the years. It is fun to reconnect with the people I admire to remind me there are good people in this business. If there were more like RFGUY radio would be a better industry. So often I tend to focus on what is wrong with our business but people like RFGuy remind me why I got into radio. RGGuy thanks for the friendship, advice and laughing at my jokes at lunch. It was fun laughing with gang in New Bern. I should have been thrown out of Moore's Bar-b-que on several occasions but to watch you and Gina Gray laugh so hard you spit your tea out was worth those people staring at me.

You are correct, pardon my typing. I didn't even notice that I had used an "n" rather than an "m". Oh well. Thanks for noticing that.

The other Vanilla Fudge song was Take Me For A Little While. And the ViKki Lawrence song was as you mentioned, The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia which by the way inspired the movie Kristy McNicol starred in in 1981. And speaking of Kristy, she had a single in 1978 along with her brother Jimmy called He's So Fine. It didn't make it to the Top 40, but it did see radio airplay and I have the 45 with the slipcover which came from their album "Kristy & Jimmy McNichol". She was a hottie for sure before she turned blonde :( .

Ron Erick Lundy and Double J two of my favorite people. Two more immediate hires if I ever have a station because of talent and more importantly to me just good folks. Two guys who know their music and their formatics.Ron Erick Lundy a legend in Eastern NC radio.Double J a genius when it comes to technical stuff(I'm jealous) and just a good friend. These guys make first media a better company.. I'm the only guy who can stump Ron Erick Lundy on music... Geez I'm such a geek!!!!!

Telephone Man/Meri Wilson

Dude I thought of that one this afternoon too! You can have it with a buzz you can have it with a ring....

And in my head, for whatever reason that happens, it always goes along with Charlene's "I've Never Been to Me" maybe because they are like antitheses or something. ;D

Yeah both are great songs. The Meri Wilson one I had heard it on a tape I was going through at the time and as soon as I did I HAD to post it. You just don't find good songs like that anymore on the radio.

;D Thanks for the kind words Allen. You are a true friend and I know Ron Eric Lundy reads this thread so I know he too will say the same. You would be my first hire. Your knowledge of music and the artists behind it is impeccable. You knew about songs that I thought only I remembered! And your music collection beats mine by about 10 times.

Well I just updated the database and there are now 933 songs that have been listed here. That's quite impressive. A definate reflection that there is an aweful lot of songs that aren't played on the radio. Granted some on the list are played now, but well over 80% are not. Keep up the great work on the song lists. I firmly believe that these songs along with all the other "safe" songs would make a great radio stationand one that would make some money too if done right.
