Great songs that were Top 40 hits that you never hear on the radio

Wow - This was a great thread - and by the way, thatks for the help on the O'Bryan single. I managed to find an old 12" at a local record shop.

I play a lot of these on my Classic Hits stream already. But I am going to have to search some shops for some of these songs. This thread brought up a lot of great memories most certainly!

Cheers,

If you need any song just PM me and we can discuss the arrangement.

This one didn't chart but anyone remember the female retaliation version of Oran Juice Jones' "The Rain" from 1986? " The Storm" I believe was the title by Miss Thang. I know it's off topic but how many other lost "answers to" versions of songs are out there? I know JoJo did Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls.
Anyway, back to the list...since we're doin' sixties & earlier now...here goes...

Younger Girl-The Critters
Mr. Dyingly Sad-The Critters
Can't Get Enough of You Baby-? & the Mysterians
Ringo-Lorne Green
Delicous! Jim Backus & Friend
I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts-Merv Griffin

How about..

Only A Lonely Heart Sees/Felix Cavaliere

Thanks to the cartoon Nancy for reminding me of that one. And speaking of that cartoon series it was interesting to see how many artists are now in their 60s and early 70s that hey had in there today.

And how about...

Come Back/J. Geils Band
Love Stinks/J. Geils Band

Again where is standards radio station with any kind of signal that we can get. I love the format but the one in New Bern on AM is all I know..

Allen

XM Satellite Radio :D

Allen wasn't talking about pay for radio availability, but regular terrestrial radio here. Which is the point. I only know of maybe one that plays some, but not all of these and that's 90.1/90.5 WZRU. Other than that not a single station in Eastern North Carolina plays them. I know of no standards radio staion in this area unless someone would be willing (and I can't believe I'm asking this again) to provide call sign, frequency and city of license of said station that has this format.
WSSM 105.1 Havelock.

I saw this on Wikipedia. They were Jack briefly but it didn't work out and their co-owned soft AC wasn't working out either. So they moved Jack to the soft AC and went back to standards.

I did mention this station on this thread already, but there are a lot of pages here.

Unfortunatrely here in Rocky Mount G-105 is on the same frequency so I cannot pick up WSSM. Yeah I think I remember the post nowm but I think I discounted it for the above reason.

Love Stinks still gets tons of airtime. So much infact that may be in my "Songs I wouldn't care if I never heard again" file...but that's off topic.

Sideshow-Blue Magic
Cowboys to Girls-The Intruders
Always something there to remind me-Sandy Shaw
Pretty Ballerina-Left Banke
Cherry Hill Park-Billy Joe Royal
No Matter What Shape Your Stomach's In-T-Bones
Windchester Cathedral-New Vaudville Band
I'm a happy man-Jive Five
I saw linda yesterday-Dicky Lee
Sit down I think I love you-the Mojo Men ;D :D ;D :D

thank you for suggesting magic 1029. i have been listening to it for the last 2 hours and lots of songs that i haven't heard in a long time....andy gibb's time is time, sheena easton (you could have been with me), diesel (sausalito summernight)

Getting back to adult standards: I don't know how many of the songs on this thread are played there, but WEZV Easy 105.9 in North Myrtle Beach covers quite a large area. Under the right conditions I pick them up as far north as Bennettsville. I don't know how The Rooster affects their signal on the north side of the state line. But they get good Arbitron numbers in Wilmington. I have to believe most of that comes from Brunswick County, where I understand a lot of retired people live.

Well I don't want to see this topic dry up (just like all the lakes and rivers are around here). So here's one for ya.

When She Dances/Joey Scarbury

It didn't make the Top 40, but it was played quite a bit. WRAL did and I have it on tape from them. It was a follow up to Greatest American Hero that he did. And speaking of "Greatest American Hero" I heard that song the other day on WZRU as well as Touch Me When We're Dancing by the Carpenters. Great songs.

::) Popsickles, Icicles.. The Mermaids
Soldier Boy ..Shelley Fabare'
Eve of Destruction..Barry McGuire
You Better Sit Down Kids..Cher
Unknown Soldier..Doors

These just came to my mind..They may be dups..Didn't have the list available

BIG APE!

It is amazing how many songs you remember and don't hear. Well I don't want to burst any bubble, but I will tell you that EVERY song that has been listed IS in the rotation of my station Magic 95.9. Started in this biz as a jock and remember the importantce of the music. You got to remember that if a song was a hit long ago, it has merit to play now. We have 8,000 songs in the library. I dare say that no other station in the country has Disco Duck & Mr. Jaws & KIng Tut in their regular rotation, but we do!!!!

WOW!! Where are you located? I'd like to listen. Do you stream your signal? And NO, no other station anywhere has those two playing in regular rotation. All three were big top 40 hits too. I'll add another song here how about Rubber Duckie by Ernie (Jim Henson) that little diddy went to #16 on the Top 40 charts that's IMHO a major hit to be #16.

I agree if a song charted, play it - period. Why should any "oldies" or classic hits station play the same 200 songs over and over and over and.. you get the idea when there were thousands of songs that charted. And many may not have been Top 40 charters, but charted on the AC charts as well and may have seen limited airplay on top 40 stations, but were big on AC stations.

I will tell ya guys Magic 95.9 is the best station bar none for AC/Oldies/Classic Top 40 in this market.Bill Benjamin is a sharp, real radio dude and he pays me very well to say good things about him.Double J I've told you about Magic. It blows the big signal corporate stations away. The only things Magic lacks in a flamethrower signal or it would be a major player in this market.Bill Benjamin has a great radio mind like you do Double J. I'll introduce you sometime.I think you would like him.He understands real live local radio and he has the best Glen Campbell (circa 1970) hairdo ever....

I remember now you did mention it to me several times. Sounds like a cool place to work with all the great songs playing on it. Cool I'd like to meet him.
