Great songs that were Top 40 hits that you never hear on the radio

On a Seperate note but its just my opinion THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE.....I can watch so much stuff I haven't seen in years or have never seen at all.I just watched The Carpenters live in London and I don't mind admitting I just boo-hooed
like a 4th grade schoolgirl.Karen's voice....Richard's arrangments.... The Band...
Lots of great female singers but Karen was simply a gift from God. I'm done now.Gotta wipe the tears and snot off my keyboard....

I agree with Allen. Just look at the cost of the satellite services. First you HAVE to by the hardware, now that's anywhere from $60 to $300 if not more this is all before you can even GET anything on it. Then there's the monthly charge, $10 to $13 a month x 12 months that's $156 a year not to mention any fees that maybe there that they never tell you about just to listen to these great songs I don't think so when I could get it on my Walkman I've had for who knows how long and for FREE. And the merger of the two satellite services is a bad idea, because invariably the cost WILL go up despite what their propoganda tells you. Give me free radio with this great playlist of songs and yes, even the same tired ones too becuse some of those I like too and I will be a happy camper.

I should have patented my idea about satellite radio when I was a kid, I wouldn't have to worry about the money now. ;D

You can get Sirius or XM units for as low as 28 bucks, can install them in less than 30 minutes , and you get what you pay for. Personally I don't mind paying 40cents a day for over 130 choices of programming, which includes commericial free music ones. Yes, I agree you shouldnt have to pay for good radio, but alas, terrestrial radio for the most part is no longer very good. The formats are limited, the playlists condensed, and the ads are up to 20 minutes out of every hour. You do pay for what you get..... keep free radio and you get junk usually. If you think paying 40 cents a day for XM or Sirius is too much, give up those greasy fries at McDonalds, or your cup of coffee, or your smokes or booze, its very easy to do and better for you and easily saves you the spare change. . Anyone who cannot afford 40 cents a day probably should stick with wonderful terrestrial. ;)

The funny thing is that the vast majority (over 95%) of the songs everyone lists are available on Sirius and XM on their channels. I don't have to hope to drive thru a city and pick up for 15 minutes some old, seldom played former Top 40 hits, I can listen to them anytime, anywhere I want to.

Channels? You mean you'd have to flip around all over the dish to find even just some of them? Sirius & XM are getting just as mainstream as regular radio & I REALLY find it hard to believe 95% of those tunes are on dish. It's not all that, plus it craps out all the time. Find me one satellite channel that plays GETCHA BACK BY THE BEACH BOYS & I'll pick up a transponder...more lists to come!!! :)

Remember most of us here WORK in terrestrial radio so 40 cents a day is somewhat of a rare commodity. At least in my house it is.

Had Sirius for awhile and then switched to XM. I'll grant that the sheer variety is there--and formats usually not available in most markets: Bluegrass, hardcore jazz, Folk, Starbucks-brand Triple A (a real mish-mash) & TV feeds from CNN, CSPAN, et al. And the MLB & NCAA feeds. So over the weekend I caught the last few innings of the Bosox rookie's no-hitter and the last quarter of a Pac 10 game that I otherwise wouldn't have heard on the East Coast--pretty cool.

But what I don't hear on satellite radio is great radio. The best-programmed music channel is Nashville's Big 98/WSIX, the only terrestrial FM carried on XM.

The posters in this thread mighth want to check out "Seventies on 7"--the playlist does go deeper than anything on regular radio--but the presentation isn't anything an average small-market terrestrial station couldn't do. In fact, that goes for just about all the music stations. Very basic stuff. Nothing to write home to mom about.

Well after weeding out the duplicates and if you factor in all the songs in listings like "all the songs from.." there has been well over 500 songs mentioned thus far on this thread. That is a great start for a station and if you factor in the regular 200 song playlist, that will give you in the neighborhood of about 800 songs. Not too bad!

Oh man, what a time trip. We used to play Ambrosia's "The Biggest Part of Me" at WGTM when I was there in 82. We got a lot of mileage out that title. ;D

We also had great fun when doing remotes from blood drives. We'd come out of songs like "Hearts" by Marty Balin, or "Heartbreaker" by Dionne Warwick, or maybe "Bad Blood" by Neil Sedaka and then say something brilliant like "speaking of blood, here's such & such broadcasting live....

Well, it seemed funny at the time!

You also need to know in this time period we are writing about we need to factor in the true AC station.Lots of songs were huge AC hits but didn't make much of a dent on top 40 radio.Example... Believe In Me-Dan Fogelberg,Looks Like Love Again-Dann Rogers(Kenny's nephew)Midnight Blue-Louise Tucker etc....I love the lists.Guys some radio management people are reading this... Most of them think we are idiots but if just one has the testicles.... you never know....
