Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

ISN'T THIS THE STATION WHERE FORMER WJRZ/WMID AM/WXTU JOCK, MIKE BROPHEY IS PD? I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS!!

WKLB/Boston Will Move From 99.5 To 102.5

Greater Media and Nassau Broadcasting Partners announced today that they have signed an exchange agreement by which Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington, New Jersey; and Nassau will acquire Greater Media’s 99.5FM frequency licensed to Lowell, Massachusetts. Nassau will also receive cash and classical music assets including the format of WCRB/Boston, now heard on the 102.5FM frequency. Greater Media plans to move its WKLB Country Music format to the 102.5 frequency.

In a separate transaction, Greater Media and Charles River Broadcasting Company have signed a definitive agreement for Greater Media to acquire Boston’s 102.5 WCRB-FM. All of the transactions are subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Greater Media will incorporate 97.5 FM into its Philadelphia cluster, which currently includes 93.3 WMMR-FM, 95.7 BEN FM, 102.9 WMGK-FM and Sports Talk 950/WPEN-AM. The call letters and format of the new station have not yet been determined. In Boston, Nassau Broadcasting will incorporate 99.5 FM into its existing New England holdings including its other Massachusetts radio stations “Pixy 103” WPXC-FM in Hyannis and “Frank FM” WFQR/WFRQ-FM in Harwich Port/Mashpee. Nassau plans to continue to broadcast the WCRB classical music format in Boston on the 99.5 FM frequency with the heritage WCRB call letters. WCRB 99.5 FM will also add to Nassau’s existing classical music network of radio stations, the WBACH network that broadcasts in coastal Maine.

"We worked very hard to identify a company that would protect the classical music format in Boston,” said Peter Smyth, Greater Media's President and CEO. I am both happy and proud that classical music will continue to have a home on the Boston airwaves. This is a great deal for all three companies, and for Boston's radio listeners and advertisers."

“Nassau has spent the last three years building a network of 37 radio stations in New England and we are extremely pleased to be able to add WCRB in Boston on its new home at 99.5 FM to our growing family of stations,” said Lou Mercatanti, Nassau’s Chairman and President. “WCRB has a heritage of broadcasting one of the premiere classical radio formats in the US and we welcome WCRB as the new flagship of our classical network of stations throughout New England.”

Re: Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

For some reason, it's all Greater Media, Millennium. Press Communications and Nassau (which has less of a presence in Monmouth/Ocean these days) out here, and they're all purveyors of the most generic radio out there. The music on all of their stations, regardless of format, is as safe and worn out as it gets. I really wish we would get some new blood in this area, in particular the Monmouth/Ocean market. Then and only then will we get a break from the bland, boring radio that dominates the airwaves.

very true indeed

Re: Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

Does anyone have an educated guess as to what Greater Media will do format-wise on 97.5?

Keep in mind they're placing it into their Philly cluster - home of BEN FM, MMR, MGK...there's a strong suburban AC (MGQ) up the turnpike in New Brunswick...I'm curious to see what some of you folks think...

Re: Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

I would love to see an Active Rock station (as in, a station that focuses on edgier rock), but the suits at Greater Media will assume that it will come out sounding too similar to WMMR. Assuming they don't operate an AC station in the market, I would predict a soft AC similar to B 101. Alternative might not be a bad format idea either - as we all know, Urban-loving Radio One pulled the plug on Y-100 because they thought the market could use another hip-hop station, but they didn't get the results they were looking for. It may happen somewhere else before this deal closes, so they might have to rule that one out.

Keep in mind that the 97.5 transmitter site is being moved to Philadelphia,
so it's an all new Philly station as well.

all news like kyw1060 or 50's and 60's oldies would be nice!!

Re: Greater Media will acquire Nassau’s 97.5FM frequency licensed to Burlington,NJ

Good stuff about this on the Philly boards- looks like some time before it all goes down (fall/winter). A lot of people betting it will be something like "The New Magic 97-5."

Wrvv couldn't protest this move?

Wixm couldn't protest this move?

Wogl couldn't protest this move?

They shouldn't be able to move this signal to Philly, greasy palms or what?

Why shouldn't they be able to move this signal? The engineering data supports it... They are not governed by the 3rd adjacent law since they are grandfathered, so OGL has no say, and they are so directional it's silly...

There is nothing to protest ... they are entirely within their rights
to move. Keep in mind, engineering firms don't apply for anything
that isn't 100% by the book. No "greasy palms"
