Hi. I know this is a radio forum but I don't know of a better place to post on this subject.
I now live in New England but last week I was back home (grew up in Greenville) and of course, being the TV geek that I am, I had to check out some of the local newscasts.
First of all, this was my first time seeing WLOS News in HD. Great set and graphics! Sinclair surprised me with the investment they made. 13 has the best-looking product in the market.
Is WYFF still not HD? They promote their weather radar as HD but it appeared (as everything else in their newscast) as 4X3, not 16X9. To me, their look is a bit stale but at the same time, polished compared to WSPA and WHNS.
I know that both 7 and 21 controls rooms are running an Ignite-style production, with the director doing multiple jobs--and it shows. 21 is hard to watch from both a production and content stand-point.
Also, to me, channel 7 seems so small market. That set is a distraction and I am disappointed that they had decided to stretch all their news footage instead of keeping the video 4X3 and putting wings on either side. Also, I caught the 10pm news on ch 62--can someone get Amy to drop the laptop because it's covering too much of the screen. Poor production decision. One more thing about WSPA; Could someone ask Tom to "center-up" to his wing camera. He keeps his body straight on but turns his head. Distracting.
(I really didn't mean for this post to turn into a b*tch session. It's just that I think some simple adjustments could make the productions so much better.)
I didn't get a real good feel for content during this visit but in the past I have preferred News4. Their story-telling appealed to me most but I have to say Newschannel 7 has done a good job of reading the market and giving the audience what it seems to want=crime, accidents, fires.
Because of ch 7's approach, I understand that they are doing well in the ratings. Is that correct? Also, I know that CBS is big help for them in primetime and Oprah doesn't contribute to ch 4 as much as she used to so the result is 7 is stronger and 4 is hurting. It's a shame that more people don't watch 4; to me, they have the best staff.
thanks for reading (and putting up with my little rants).
