Griffin Communications to Buy KSBI, Create Oklahoma City Duopoly

Griffin Communications has announced it has reached an agreement to buy MyNetworkTV station KSBI from Family Broadcasting, LLC.

Griffin owns the Oklahoma City and Tulsa CBS affiliates KWTV and KOTV, along with Tulsa CW affiliate KQCW. The station group said the newest addition will help Griffin expand to Central and Western Oklahoma by creating a duopoly with KWTV.

[Griffin Communications CEO David] Griffin added, “One of the many things we are excited about is that our viewers will not miss regular CBS and syndicated programming when we are in severe weather or continuous news coverage on News 9, because we will be able to move this programming over to KSBI.”

mmm.... I wonder if they're going to bring newscasts back to KSBI. I wouldn't be surprised to see them compete with 25 and 43 at 9 with local news. Also wouldn't be a surprise if KSBI were to swap affiliates with KOCB and become an affiliate of the CW.

What I meant was that Griffin could possibly do what is done in Minneapolis with KTCA/KTCI, KSTP/KSTC and KMSP/WFTC.

The stations' digital channels are multiplexed:

That makes sense I would love to see Griffing go down the same route as what Hubbard does with KSTP/KSTC, however the difference will be that KSBI will have live sporting events (I don't get why they put Rangers games on 52.2) whereas KSTC they don't even have sports at all. Additionally KWTV has News 9 Now on 9.2 and I don't think Griffin would like to move that away from 9.2

Considering it hasn't happened in Tulsa, where Griffin already has a duopoly, I would say no.

What would Griffin gain by repeating 9 and 52's main signals on each other's subchannels? If the transmitters are in essentially the same place, they don't gain anything.

Maybe just have KSBI share the tower with KWTV or have KWTV share the tower with KSBI or vise versa. But as far as putting KSBI's main signal on 9.3 I don't think that it'll happen but what I think it's going to happen is they could move the This TV affiliation to 9.3 and move Rangers games on Friday nights to 52.1 the 9pm newscast can move to either 9.3 or especially 9.2 (News 9 Now) that's the way I see it happening. They got News 9 Now they can put live newscasts at if KSBI has to preempt it for Rangers baseball games. That's the way I see it happening.

I agree, if I see a 9.3 happening it would be for the This TV affiliation, move Texas Rangers games to 52.1 and use News 9 Now for newscasts that would normally air on KSBI. But as far as relaying KSBI's signal on 9.3 goes. I don't think that it'll happen.

Each station's transmitters are located in northern edge of OKC. KWTV has a higher broadcast tower, and has a slightly-wider coverage area than KSBI, but essentially cover the same core coverage area.

You nailed it right on the nose. I think if you combine the 2 towers it'll be an impressive coverage area throughout Central and Western Oklahoma
 
I just did the figuring on the total hours of local news on both KWTV and KSBI here's my projected news lineup will look like on KWTV and KSBI in 2015:

4-7am: News 9 This Morning

7-10am: News 9 This Morning on KSBI My 52 TV

11am-Noon: News 9 at 11am on KSBI My 52 TV

Noon-12:30pm: News 9 at Noon

4-5pm: News 9 at 4

5-5:30pm: News 9 at 5

5:30-6pm: News 9 at 5:30 on KSBI My 52 TV

6-7pm: News 9 at 6

9-10pm: News 9 at 9 on KSBI My 52 TV

10-10:35pm: News 9 at 10

Saturdays:

5-8am: News 9 Saturday Morning

8-9am: News 9 Saturday Morning on KSBI My 52 TV

6-7pm: News 9 at 6

Total hours of local news on both KWTV and KSBI: 13 and a half hours on weekdays, 7 hours on Saturdays and 8 and a half hours on Sundays for a grand total of of 18 and a half hours on KWTV and 12 and a half hours on KSBI for a total of 31 hours of local news on both KWTV and KSBI, that's in comparison to 8 and a half hours on weekdays, 3 and a half hours on Saturdays, and 5 and a half on Sunday's on KFOR, and only 3 and a half hours of local news on KAUT. That's a lot more local news on KWTV/KSBI than KFOR/KAUT.
 
Griffin buying KSBI for $3.2 Million creating a duopoly with KWTV

According to the paperwork filed with the FCC it looks like Griffin is buying KSBI for $3.2 Million, and if the FCC doesn't approve the transaction by December 1st, then Griffin will take over KSBI under a Local Marketing Agreement thus the KWTV/KSBI duopoly would take effect on December 1st, but who knows the FCC might approve it before December 1st. We'll have to wait and see how well this duopoly of KWTV and KSBI goes but I have a great feeling that's it's going to be great.
 
Well it looks like the KSBI website is shut down and it redirects you to the news 9 page, they also stopped posting on Facebook and Twitter and it now repeats shows that aired last week so as of December 1st at Midnight, KSBI is now owned by Griffin Communications and it's now a sister station to KWTV News 9.
