Grundig G8: Review and bandscan from Marysville, WA

I got myself a Grundig G8 finally! Been wanting one for several weeks now, due to the excellent FM performance. Here's my review.

FM: Excellent, much better than the G5. On non-IBOC stations, interference is kept to a minimum, and stations next to each other don't cream in. For example, in Marysville I can get both KAFE 104.1 Bellingham, WA and CHHR 104.3 Vancouver, B.C. On 104.3, CHHR is alone with no interference from KAFE OR KMCQ 104.5. Should be my next Es radio!

AM: Fair, not as good as my G5. The G8 has a soft mute on the AM, meaning stations below a certain dbu level are muted out, so for weak nighttime DX...not so good. The G8 has a dbu/db meter on it as well, meaning I can get good DB reports off it. For example, I found out that KIXI 880, 50kw day/10kw night @ 1.5 mi, has a steady 86 or 87-25, sometimes up to 89-25 to the N/S, while at night it's about 83-25 or less.

SW: Fair-good. Haven't tried it out a lot yet, but omits SSB, a major part of this band (hams, VOLMET, etc.). The reception is pretty good, earlier today had a good 40+ dbu on 9420 (Voice of Greece).

Here's a bandscan I took from Marysville, WA yesterday with the G8, showing off it's good FM abilities.

DAMN GOOD!

KISM/CKYE and KAFE/CHHR actually coexist pretty well in Bellingham. Only Mount Vernon gets the Canadian stations one notch over outblasted by 92.9 and 104.1

Great to hear you have the G8, crainbebo!

I got mine a little more than a year ago and at first I wondered if it was worth the 50 bucks because it was so tiny but wow. It sure was worth the money! :)

And I'm still the same batteries I put in when I first bought it too.

You're right about the FM. It has fantastic selectivity and sensitivity. I'd say it's at least as good as my much larger Sangean PR-D5.

And just in case you haven't noticed already, you can hear the FM in stereo if you use headphones.

I'm really impressed with what it gets on shortwave!

Considering the size and just the little antenna, I've gotten some amazing catches including often hearing the woman's voice from WWVH in Hawaii in the background of WWV and sometimes just as strong.

Here's a site that will really help you in getting IDs from shortwave stations. Just put in the frequency and it will tell you what station is broadcasting at the given time and from where.

Happy DXing to you.

I don't DX a lot on SW like I used to, but 31/41/49m is full at 1400-1500 UTC, all Asian, all the time.

For the longest time, I wasn't into shortwave DXing like I was long ago but I eventually got the bug again after reading some of the posts here and I realized that I shouldn't just limit myself to AM and FM.

That's why I got my Grundig G8 last year.

Once you start scanning the shortwave band, it's like eating peanuts, especially the lower end of the band this time of year at night.

I just got another good catch tonight from Romania and this station was booming in great for that distance.

I bought one to0 almost a year ago and I still love it! I have the traveller 2 version of the G8 and what a nice little radio it truly is. To show how selective the FM tuner is I live within sight of a station at 97.9 which is an ethnic station and right next to it is a station at 98.5. Both use the same transmitter which I can see from the house and is less than half a mile away. I can get a Montreal classic rock station at 97.7 and sometimes a 12KW station at 98.7 which is about an hour to the west. On most radios the stations at 97.9 and 98.5 eat up about 2/3rds of the FM dial, causing drift and bleedover all across the dial.

I notice the radio doesn't have much problem with desensing when tuned near a strong signal. The leaking onto an AM station 10khz away is very minimal. I have a local at 1310 which is 50KW of power. I can hear a station at 1320 with very little scratching that's 4 hours away and a station at 1300 comes in very cleanly. I can detune to 1323 or 1297 and hear each station with no interference at all. The shortwave is a nice little tuner to0. BBC has killed all north american service and here in Ottawa, I can still get it on 6005 khz sometimes. The only down side (supposedly) is the longwave tuner. Most people say it's deaf. I have heard very weak longwave signals from europe (with help from putting it up to a chain link fence) but without it, 25 watt beacons that are over 100 kms away are audible. I've asked for a tunable AM antenna from my parents for Christmas and I can't wait to see what it does for this little guy. Those very very faint Toronto signals should be sounding like locals, as should the Montreal x-banders that I like.
