H-I, Once Known as History International, is now H2.

A decade ago MTV2 was MTV's answer to where all the music went, and so is H2 The History Channel's answer to where shows about history have gone?

Or, will H2 be like today's MTV2 and just be another wasted channel where The History Channel's new programming is also aired?

This is actually the first step toward a total rebranding. After a couple of years, H2 is going to focus on all water-oriented programming as "H2O". From movies ("The Waterboy" and "The River Wild" to those that don't even entriely have to do with water like "Deliverance") to reality shows ("Can Breast Implants Float?"), H2O will have you keeping your head above water!

::)

Well the name "International," kind of locks them in to a certain type of programming. H2 does not, so it makes sense. I think more TV execs are recognizing the value in not having a name that locks you into a certain programming type

Quite some time ago, HI morphed from a channel that focused on international "history" (or topics at least) and instead became the dumping ground for reruns from the History Channel. And you'll note that the "International" part of the brand was gradually de-emphasized over time. Given this, even the "HI" name no longer made sense.

As H2, they can do what they're doing - being a second outlet for History viewers, showing older History Channel fare - with a straight face.

It sounds to me like they are doing EXACTLY what MTV did. Over the years, they've added more reality programming and non-history fare to History Channel, now they are morphing a sister channel into the '2' network to give fans of the first network a place to go.

Now, how long before Ice Road Truckers repeats show up here too?

Oh, I am VERY confident that we will be seeing that this winter if not sooner. That's one change I'm sure we'll see with "H2": less Nostradamus and Hitler and more IRT, Top Shot, and Pawn Stars reruns. Any pretense of keeping "HI" somewhat 'highbrow' goes out the window with this change.

The H2 name, much like the MTV2 name, seems so lazy to me. However, I have no idea what else you would call this channel.
IIRC MTV2 was conceived because MTV stopped showing music videos and MTV2 was there to carry on the MTV tradition (for as long as that lasted).

I just checked the schedule for History & H2 and, yea, looks like history is repeating (yea, I meant to type that). :D ;)

For two long years the only reason I kept cable was to be able to have the top-notch programs of the BBC History Channel. When that died, several years ago, there was no reason left to keep cable. Now, it seems, there is no reason to ever go back.

I hope not. Keep that stuff on History. Keep the actual history on H2. Don't need 2 channels of the same thing.

Even if they used a jingle to the tune of Wings's "Hi, Hi, Hi"? (I'll talk more about ex-Beatles in a moment.)

It can make sense if it changes its focus to things Aloha State. HI is the postal abbreviation of Hawaii. Do it right away and there are two things Hawaii-connected they can do. One has to do with December 7 (no prizes for guessing, even for the 70th anniversary). And the other - here comes the Beatles back - could be a special on George Harrison (the tenth anniv. of his death is coming up), who had a retreat on Maui (according to You Never Give Me Your Money by Peter Doggett).
