Hallmark Channel At Center Of Storm Over Ad Featuring Lesbian Brides Kissing

Hallmark Channel is facing criticism on multiple fronts over an advertisement featuring a lesbian couple on their wedding day.

The ad is for Zola.com, a wedding planning and registry company, and shows two women exchanging vows and later kissing to celebrate their nuptials. It was one of six commercials for the website that Hallmark began airing on December 2.

Conservative group One Million Moms took aim at Hallmark for airing the ad, which it said was not “family friendly.” The group launched a petition earlier this week, pressing the cable network to pull the commercial and other LGBTQ content.

Hallmark bowed to the group’s complaints and stopped airing the ad, saying it violated the cable network’s policies. In a statement issued to the New York Times, a spokesperson for Hallmark insisted the public display of affection violated the cable channel’s standards.

Meanwhile, Zola stated that its same-sex commercial was intended to be inclusive, and the company vowed to continue to feature “all kinds” of couples in its advertising.

Could other advertisers flee the channel? Could it hurt the channel's ratings? Could the channel get dropped by cable/satellite providers?

So if it was a man and woman kissing it would be family friendly? What a stupid complaint by this irrelevant group looking for some attention.

Actually, it is quite relevant as it shows the polarization on not just political lines but on social ones as well that affect every move by the media.

No, no, and no. It's an ad, not a program. If Christmas At Graceland featured a gay couple, that would be one thing.

The criticism should be directed to the advertiser.

these groups have interns watching TV all day looking for things to be outraged over, even shows the Christian fundamentalists have no interest in, this group doesn't even reveal it's real number of members, it's doesn't even require it's members to be mothers even woman

I find it hypocritical of Hallmark to make such a statement. Their entire lineup of movies is all about public display of affection.
Studies have shown that today's youth and young adults are not at all concerned about such things as the LGBTQ lifestyle.
It seems only to offend older adults who have not accepted the fact that the world is changing.

That's my two-cents worth.

Now Hallmark is apologizing.

After backlash from LGBTQ groups and calls to boycott the network, the CEO of Hallmark Cards apologized Sunday night for removing an ad because it featured two brides kissing, saying the network would reinstate the commercials from wedding-planning startup Zola.

In a statement, Hallmark channel owner Mike Perry said the company has been “agonizing” over the decision to pull the ad “as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused” and apologized.

“Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision. Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts from this purpose is not who we are. We are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused,” he added.

The company said it would also reach out to Zola and reinstate the commercials. In response to the controversy, Zola had said it would stop advertising on the Hallmark channel altogether.

I bet that last sentence has a lot to do with the apology:

In response to the controversy, Zola had said it would stop advertising on the Hallmark channel altogether.

Given the choice of angering some political group or an advertiser, which would you choose? They made the wrong decision.

Seems to me there could have been a solution had they worked together with the sponsor.

Like what? Airing the ad only between midnight and 4 a.m.? Having the women shake hands instead of kiss? The sponsor obviously wanted to make a statement of inclusiveness within the framework of a TV ad. Either Hallmark accepts the ad or it doesn't. I don't see a compromise possible.

I don’t quite understand why this group finds straight sex couples kissing acceptable but not gay couples.

Their demo is 80 year old grannies in small midwestern towns.

This wouldn't be an issue if Hallmark channel didn't cave to 10 Moms oh, I mean 1 Million Moms that doesn't have 1 million members and would've blown over already. Hallmark Channel has no one to blame but themselves on why this hasn't blown over and why everyone is still talking about. It's no big deal so what that 2 ladies were kissing Zola did the right thing by pulling all their ad's on Hallmark channel I don't know if Hallmark & Zola can patch things up.

Checking the OneMillionMoms website, I see that about 26,000 people signed their petition.

Less than a million, more than ten.

As with all online petitions, the number has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Likely many signatures from people paid to do so, ordered to do so by their Pharisees -- I mean "pastors" -- or people who posted under different names with disposable email addresses given for verification.

I guess its time to start protesting against TGI Friday too. I just saw a new commercial for them and there was a gay couple kissing. Oh the humanity, oh the sin!!!!!! I usually don't go there as their food is not to my liking, but I might have to go to support an inclusive ad campaign.
