Actually, the value lies where what someone is willing to pay for it. If someone is willing to give $150,000 then that's the value. If nobody offers more than $1000 then that's the value. And if it sits with no offers, then that's the value.

FWIW we sold an FM5K1 which is a 1987 version of an HT-5 complete with sold state IPA and an an MX15 exciter for $5k earlier this year. Knowing what I know about it I wouldn't have wanted to be the person to get it resurrected (especially after it sat under a carport in the humid south for 4 months) and back into daily use but we did get some cash to put towards the new Nautel so the owner was happy to take it.

If you can get it, take it.

I'm not sure where it went. As far as I know it went to EMF. Did you recently come across one that had rocks inside (I didn't do it!) used as spacers on the caps? If so that would be it. The transmitter was originally in Arkansas.

Nope, that's not it. Whew. This guy bought this 5k1 to use and it's in trbl shape. He said it was kept in a garage before he got it. I tell him it'd cost more to get the Harris up and running than what it's worth.

Nautel makes some fine FM transmitters, and the 88% number might be possible at the level of a single power FET. But that value would be unlikely for the AC input to r-f output efficiency of the complete transmitter system.

The Nautel product line brochure for the new NV series of FM transmitters shows their overall AC to r-f efficiency to range from 61% for the 3.5 kW model to 64% at the 40 kW model.

Rich has pretty much nailed it - efficiency for the 3.5, 7.5, 15 and 30kW systems is 61% AC to RF and for the 5, 10, 20 and 40 is 64%. I suspect the original poster was looking at the early efficiency specification for our NX series AM transmitters, which was listed at 88% overall when the product was first released. We've made some improvements since then and are now achieving 90% overall efficiency on the NX series - but we're not there yet on the FM's... it gives us something to aim for!

Sorry to bump - but unit's still for sale - had a buyer back out. I will go down as low at $4500.00 since that seems to be where most offers have centered if anyone is still interested. Thanks.

I sure wished my non-comm gov't owned station could buy used equipment. At that price it would be worth just having it around as a backup or something to keep the main running... Oh well... Instead we will end up buying a new one some day. No sense makes sense eh?
