HARRY MORGAN OF M*A*S*H DIES AT 96

Fox aired a mash reunion special 8 or 9 years ago(it seems like yesterday) harry morgan and larry gelbart were there and now they're both gone it's sad indeed.

Harry's real first name is Henry but when he broke into show biz another comedian had that name so he chose 'Harry'.

That would be Henry Morgan, the acerbic Radio/TV comic and panelist on TV's I've Got A Secret. His barbs often got him into trouble. One victim of his lampooning was his own sponsor, Lifesavers, who promptly dropped his radio show for daring the candy maker to ship him the middles removed from the candy centers. Nobody was safe from Morgan's acidy digs, not even the sainted Kate Smith.

No wonder our beloved Colonel changed his name to Harry.

Funny, I had heard the same thing. But according to other sources, his birth name was Harry Bratsberg.

Speaking of Henry Morgan - I recall that he was anti-rock and roll, and caused a controversy in the late 60s when he trashed the Beatles. To prove his point, he read (without music), the lyrics to the song Hello, Goodbye...."Hello, hello, I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello"...etc

I remember having to admit that without the music, it did sound pretty stupid.

Funny-- I thought Steve Allen said that.

Hmmmm...you may be right. I do recall that Henry Morgan was a Beatles detractor, but when I googled "Steve Allen Hello Goodbye" - i got a hit. Hopefully the Board Moderators will not mind a partial quote:

Because of Steve Allen's comedic nature and song writing acumen he made comments on variety shows about a music awards back in the 60s. He could not have been more funny as he roasted the Beatles, especially Paul McCartney and John Lennon for writing a hit song, Hello/Goodbye. Saying that the song didn't express much lyrically

It goes on - and it appears that Allen was just poking fun, not really a Beatles detractor. Henry Morgan was an acerbic critic of many things in popular culture - rock music being one of them.
