That's exactly my point. You are quick to tell us how much money you make. I don't think most PDs are comfortable hiring somebody who makes more than their boss. If you don't need the job. If you act like you are better than the PD, and more successful than the VP, there is a good chance you could be into the job only for you not for the station. I know you want to do it as a hobby, but your hobby is somebody elses career. If you want to do it as a hobby, tell them that, but follow the rules they lay out for your hobby.

So, just for the sake of argument, why would you want to become one of them?

I was hired one time via a studio audition. I was handed a news script and a cassette, and was told, "Here. Read this and record it." The position: part-time weekend news anchor. Sundays.

At no point did I feel offended because my resume and aircheck tape didn't "speak for itself." At no point did I feel that the hiring procedure was beneath me. And at no point did I show disrespect.

You see, Todd, I actually *wanted* the job. Moreover, I *needed* the job.

For a lot of us, this ain't no hobby. It's a lifestyle and a passion and we think nothing of putting in absurd numbers of hours just to make sure something sounds right. We think nothing of working in multiple departments just so the higher-ups get to know our names and our skills.

I don't care if you own a voice that God Himself would envy. You're asking that station for something. That means you go by their rules, not yours.

Frankly, I think your post has shown all of us a lot more than a tape, resume, or audition could ever show.

As someone who hired and fired, I asked nearly everyone who came in to go into a studio and cut a tape, even people who were interviewing for weekend overnights. Which ones didn't I ask? The ones I had no intention of hiring after going through the interview.

Think of this: You were probably THE FINALIST for the shift! The PD would not have asked you for a trial shift if s/he wasn't interested in hiring you.

As a manager, I'd have to ask myself: If you refuse to do one thing that I ask you (trial shift), what else are you going to refuse to do?

One more note: If I asked someone to do a trial on-air shift and they refused ... and then the person came back to me and said, "You know, I was a little hasty. Can I still do that trial shift?" I'd give that person a try-out right away.

Sometimes the best people to hire are those who realize they've made a mistake ... and are willing to admit it and try again.

Several Years ago...Hot 105.7 (WQXA York) brought me in for a weekend shift for an on-air audition. Have to realize that anyone can slice and dice a good 3 in demo tape...but can you hold your own during the course of a 4-6 hour shift 5-6 days a week? Thats the real test. I don't feel an on-air audition is out of line, but no not everyone does em.

Or ride a horse.

Haha.

I already live in Carlisle, at least for now. And I'm trying to run away as quickly as possible!

J/K, J/K, relax...

WXTU Middays? Really? Musta been a very long time ago because Leigh Richards has been in that slot since the 1980's.

I bet I know where...

The only PD I know that makes you audition for a PT air shif is Will Robinson at Red. Am I right???? Am I????

Todd, are you STILL harping on this one? Man...I'm out of the market 11 years, and you're STILL screaming and yelling! Come on, let's check our weather together.

Ego-Mania

It's a programmer's perogative, my friend. If it were my station, I would have asked you to go into prod with my station's liner book and VT a sample shift using those liners (seeing how you sell the station events within your breaks) and basic artist info and content. I'd want to make 100% sure that you weren't doing "creative editing" with your aircheck tape before I put you live on my airwaves.

I agree with something someone else said in this thread in that if you're asked to do an on-air audition shift and you truly are as solid as your aircheck says you are, then it's not an on-air audition, it's your first paid shift on my radio station. I also believe that you may have been given an ego check BASED on your previous experience in Philadelphia. If you are going to do part-time on my radio station, I want to make sure that you're not coming into my building with your head swollen to the size of Terrell Owens' paycheck and you're not going to hold an air of mightyness above my airstaff.

If I'd been that PD in Harrisburg, you would have proven my exact fear by your refusal to do an on-air audition. I'd rather train and coach the hell out of some high school kid than deal with the headaches associated with an overinflated ego.

"furthermore the airstaff of the particular station is less than stellar and i was insulted because the airstaff is not even capable of shining my shoes."

Just as I pointed out above. With that kind of mental state, you won't last anywhere very long.

jeffro this market has eroded to west va there are many dipsticks running radio stations that are not capable of cleaning toilets or mercedes in the mayor palace furthermore... my favorite example is one of the most puking jocks that ever worked in reading gets a full time gig and never worked the majors...despite i kindly asked for a pt gig. >

wow, with that attitude, i wouldn't let you clean the toilets in my building. you are glad you don't have to do radio and believe me we are glad not to have you...

Such anger... Such hostility...The only thing more hostile than a person who works in radio, is someone who can't.Cheer up. Have some cocoa.

Sounds to me like a creative way to get your weekend slots filled cost free! If you can schedule 5 or 6 auditions a weekend.... hmmm....
