Has anyone on this board had the opportunity to do a radio scan from Mount Rainier?

Unfortunately, I have never thought of doing a scan the few times I have been up at the Paradise or Sunrise parking lots. Have any of you guys had the opportunity to do a scan from Mount Rainier, or any other high elevation area for that fact?

I had the opportunity to DX just near Skykomish one time about 2200 feet at the start of the Iron Goat Trail off the Old Cascade Hwy. 98.1 and 107.7 were white noise, gone completely. But KJR 95.7 still came in and out in stereo, even though there were mountains in 360 degree directions around me. Was also able to get some Victoria BC, Olympia and Vancouver stuff but nothing from the east.

At Snoqualmie Pass I've caught KFFM from Yakima - and then it disappears for many miles (until about Cle Elum!) Victoria BC and Bellingham made appearances as well...

Interesting! It seems to me that stations like KJR (C0 licence, lower height but high wattage) can blast through a lot of terrain, as opposed to other stations at a full class C status.

IIRC the "original" Ackerley stations are mostly from Cougar with 100,000 watts... it's just the difference between sheer power and having to drop the power due to the height of Tiger Mountain you are probably seeing. In the outer fringes (Centralia, Bellingham etc) you can really tell the difference--the Tiger stations have less multi path (but a "weaker" signal).

Thanks for the information! I wonder mountain provides a better overall signal..

For the BEST reception, you'll have to go all the way to the summit...

Before they banned FM radios on commercial jets, when getting near Mt. Rainier on a flight to San Diego I could get all the Seattle, Portland, Aberdeen, some Vancouver BC, some Astoria, and some Yakima stations. I assume the same could be done from the 14,000 foot summit of Rainier.

Closer to sea level, I could get all the Vancouver, Victoria, and higher-powered Aberdeen stations from the summit of Green Mountain here in Bremerton. This was back in 2000 though when I brought a radio with me on my hike up to there. Interestingly because Gold Mountain directly to the south blocks most of the southern signals, CHKG 96.1 from Vancouver comes in nicely on Green, with no sign of KXXO. Now with all the translator stations powering up, things might be a little different.

From the Mt. Rainier area SWhyde, what was the farthest station you could grab up from there? Eugene OR?

Green Mountain seems to have that same thing like once you get up to Quilcene and Chimacum - Olympia stuff = GONE. All I hear on 96.1 is CHKG, 97.7 is CBUF, 96.9 is CKLG.

The Eugene stations didn't come in until I was over Portland.

I thought South Mountain would provide better coverage then that! When does CBUF and CHKG fade to KOMO and KXXO when driving south on I-5?

I notice CHKG fading to KXXO around south Everett, sometimes north Lynnwood - but usually not too far south after that. I've heard CHKG way down in Woodway and almost Richmond Beach with a clear signal.

Im sure they would be audible all of the way down here in the Tacoma area, if it were not for KOMO-FM and KXXO existing.
