Has WMGK tweaked the music toward some harder classic rock?

It's been a while since I've tuned in to WMGK, but in the last few days of scanning, I've heard Ozzy Osbourne's 'Flying High Again' and G'N'R's 'Welcome To The Jungle'. Not saying it's strange hearing them on a classic rock station...just strange that the station in question is WMGK...

I have not tuned in lately but I imagine they had to start modifying the tracks a little. If my memory serves me correctly, didn't MGK switch to classic rock from classic hits almost 10 years ago. Hard to believe. DeBellla has been on that station a long time now and possibly as long as he was on MMR.

I remember when MMR stopped playing early 60's tracks and then stopped playing the Beatles...time goes on. One signal is when Rod Carson's Rock and Roll Roots Saturday morning ended. Another is when MMR ended the 2pm Soul Patrol and the 6pm Psychedila Supper. This schedule gave MMR character.

On Sirius, they break up the classic rock into two stations with a little overlap. One station (Vinyl) plays late 60's to mid 70's. The other station (Rewind) plays mid 70's to very early 90''s by classic rock veterans. You will not hear grunge, but you will hear "Learning to Fly" by Petty.

MGK has a massive amount of music to play. GNR is interesting but they are a late 80's/early 90's band (with regards to their well known songs).

Ozzy and G'N'R are not a stretch. Both songs are in-stadium staples for most pro sports teams. If anything, their burn scores might be a liability.

Is this more overlap than previously with what WMMR is playing? Or is this to compensate for a corresponding move by MMR (perhaps not implemented yet) away from artists from that era?

I was just curious to see if anyone noticed it besides me. Yeah - Ozzy and GNR are nothing out of the ordinary, as far as classic rock radio goes, but I guess my point is that WMGK has been calling themselves 'classic rock' for years, but never really migrating to the newer 21st century version of the format and still being pretty much a rock based classic hits brand. Maybe now, they've started making that move...

BTW - from what I remember, WMGK dropped the 'Magic' format in 1994 in favor of 70's, which evolved into classic hits...

Your memory is correct. 1994 one weekend they just kept going with the 70's. morfed into clasic hits and eventually classic rock.
That's one reason i always liked the last incarnation of WYSP. they rocked classic rock harder than MGK.
plus, i liked the voiceguy better too.

Looks like par for the course to me. Theres millions of songs written in the rock genre and WMGK plays about 500 of them over and over and over again.

Sounds stuck mostly in the 70's if you ask me, as always.
maybe they continue to do this to protect MMR, so MMR can do the later classic rock and newer rock music as an AOR?
