Hats Off to ABC for the Launch of 104.9 The Cat!

As you all know I never, ever have anything nice to say about the ABC bunch and how they run things over there. Today however I thought I would give a hand to the way they fooled the folks over at (Regent) WGNA with the way they launched 104.9 The Cat. We all thought on Wednesday that 100.9 The Bridge was all in the bag of tricks at ABC. On Friday morning without no warning they dropped an elbow on WGNA. Anyone can say that 104.9 FM will never hurt the Cruise Ship they call WGNA. I have been listening to THE CAT all weekend. It's very refreshing to listen to. Congrats Kevin C and Chuck B for a great one two punch.

Or a great one two shooting themselves in the feet.....

I have mentioned a few times that WGNA should have competition. I applaud this move. I'm sorry that a few people do not agree. But when you have an average of a 1.5 ratings share, nobody is listening. I feel bad for the staff that will not make the move to country.

Going country and chipping away at WGNA has some merit. They tried this once before and gave up after about a year or so with WPTR-FM 96.3. I am not sure they have the patience to stick to it, especially with the 104.9 signal, which has to be the worst in the market. Without some type of marketing campaign, e.g. TV, billboards, busbacks, it is very likely that no one in the metro will know that it exists. Right now Mister is pinching his pennies so hard they are screaming, I doubt very much that he'll spend one or two on marketing... for a throw away station... in Albany...

You dump as much money as you can scrape up  And spend even more money on a staff ;D and I'm sure this will be a huge thorn in their side for about a year before you take this no profit ventureback to Oldies/ Soft AC ;) And then we''ll forget this silliness even happened! ;) Noone will knock you for trying...too loudly!! ::)

Mr. Marshall are you being biased because you are a pt DJ on WGNA? I for one am glad that WGNA has competition.

Competition is fine, but I for one am not convinced that this will work any better than 96.3 or 104.9 did before. If there were 2 class B's going head to head with similar coverage areas, I would say maybe but it would take some time. I don't think 104.9 will do it.

<YAWN> Country....ADULT hits....easy listening...is this the Capital Region..or some retirement community in Florida.
Way to go ABC....add to the heap another un-inventive move that only quickens your road to the same destination as Regent-------------------BANKRUPTCY...!

Come on., Capital Region is there one ounce of creativity or imagination or ENERGY for that matter?!!! If you're gonna "give up," at least do it by running something that will stand out on the dial when someone is flipping.....maybe an all-out dance station? HOT 104.9 or Energy 104.9 or Power 104.9...."DANCE YOUR ASS OFF!!!!"
Imagine the talk and the ads..how about the possibility on the Billboards?
Is is really that hard to be innovative!? IT seems that everytime some GM or owner in this area has the opening to flip a format it's always..."Gee how about we add a rock station or get this.....we could do adult music.....!"

NO wonder radio is DYING........morons!

Paging Tony Santiago... Mr. Santiago, your presence is requested on the Albany/Hudson Valley board...

I have said for years that 'GNA needs competition and its a good move, but: country listeners are a fickle bunch, and even as bad as the S&R show is, they will stick by it. They have a good clear blowtorch signal. They are live most of the time. Down here in po-town we have WRWD; which is the dominant country station. With a few exceptions, the programming is the same as everywhere else, and you can tell how cheap cc is as the on air talent isn't...I don't know who let these teeny boppers on the air, they cant speak english...morning co host sounds like a valley girl. 94.3 the wolf has the same music and mix, and average air talent, and they are always at the bottom of the dumper in the book. same music and mix....wrwd is consistently at the top..go figure....this will be interesting to see how this will work out in Albany- all they can do is get out there and promote the best they can and make themselves visible.
Good thread- but one thing confuses me. I have been a professional broadcaster for many years. One of the things I learned along the way is that a truly great dj (and I am definitely NOT calling myself great by any means!) can handle any format. These clowns said the were untrainable on country music?? Wow, the pool of on-air talent is pretty poor these days......

I just had a thought... it involves the subject of a very active thread on this board... but with a new country station within the 50-mile radius, does anyone think Tommy Lee Walker will show up on The Cat in the near future?

The only felon that ABC will hire is Sherman Baldwin. The only people who really care about Tommy Lee Walker also only care about oldies translators and 1 watt AM stations.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that they will voice track this station from one of their other, out of market country stations. They have country stations in Pensacola and Gainesville, FL; Rutland VT and Glens Falls. Likely you'll be hearing some good ol' boys from Pensacola mis-pronouncing local place names soon! Horay! And no, I don't work for WGNA.

I personally would like to see them take a stab at Kerhonkson and Cuddebackville...
