Have you seen the Judgement day Billboards that 610 AM is posting around the bay

I tried to access their website, out of curiosity, at http://www.familyradio.com/ to see what they plan to broadcast tomorrow and Sunday - seems to be down as of Friday afternoon, Pacific time. Oops - it's up, but running real slowly, and links aren't working very well. Seems to add to the aura of gross irresponsibility at the little organization with a lot of radio stations, who seems to have captured a degree of media attention, if not just for the sheer balls of it all.

Did Clear Channel or CBS put up any of their billboards proclaiming May 21 as "Judgement Day"? Whoever were the owners of the billboards also seem like fools, only concerned about the money, and not what it might do to perpetually frightened people, particularly the elderly whom they seem to program to (and perhaps their grandkids who hear about all this and start to freak out).

I suggest another sort of Judgement Day for the perpetrators of this, and those who made $$ off of it.

Talk about media attention! Saw a news van parked near the house of Camping's local follower here in my neighborhood in Sonoma Valley. Extended mast with dish for microwave link, and all. Guess they'll interview him. Must be a slow news day! Maybe the old guy could end up going to heaven, even if the prediction doesn't come to pass, assuming it's really possible to die of embarrassment.

I am absolutely astonished at how much media attention this scam has gotten and I am not just talking about local new coverage but national coverage.

Tonight there is a segment about it on the "Need To Know" program at 10 pm on channel 9.

I think that they also covered it on Nightline.

You cannot buy the kind of media coverage this guy has gotten for free - all it cost him is a few billboards.

Brilliant marketing actually.

Update Philippine media ABS-CBN news has shown that Mr Campings Billboards are in the Philippines and located on Metro Manila area Freeways. In the ABS-CBN report Mr Camping's supporters are blocking lanes of metro manila freeways for Mr Camping's Publicity Stunt. Does Mr Camping really own a station in the Philippines?

Sadly, no one in the Family Radio cult will ever admit that they were wrong. That is if they don't pull a nationwide Heaven's Gate.
That is my fear too. Will there be any Heaven's Gate type of mass suicides among his loyal cult listeners? And if so and Harold Camping is still around, I can see family members suing Camping, maybe bankrupting him? Maybe it will be Judgement Day for "Family Radio"?

Didn't KYLD 107.7fm in 1993 when now Fox News contributer ManCow was there get fired for a radio publicity stunt by blocking all lanes of the Bay Bridge at Rush Hour? I heard the CHP arrested Mancow in 1993 for this stunt. Mr Camping is going have some explaing to do with Philippine Traffic enforcers and the MTRCB (Philippine version FCC) the reason ABS-CBN News Philippines has confirmed that Mr Camping has billboards and newsvans in Metro Manila freeways and some of Mr Camping's Philippine staff have Supporters blocking all lanes of traffic on a Manila Freeway at the height of evening Rush Hour.

In the blind wisdom of Harold Camping, HE probably thinks it's brilliant marketing.

However, the rest of the people that haven't bought into his cult - which amounts to 99% of the population - would beg to differ. His cult will be promptly forgotten on May 23, after a full day of mocking and laughing at them all for giving organized religion a bad name.

That is, of course, presuming that they don't ascend into heaven kill themselves first.

...dunno if he owns a piece of the station, but Camping's Tagalog-language programming is heard from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly on DWSS 1494 kHz in the Manila metro, according to the Family Radio listing at Wikipedia...

David Letterman has had this in his 'top ten list' a couple times this week, including tonight. It has certainly become a nationwide joke, much like Harold Camping himself.

But it seems the joke might be on all of us; Camping is laughing all the way to the bank:

http://money.cnn.com/2011/05/19/new...orld-finances-harold-camping/index.htm?hpt=C1

It's "The PTL Club" all over again. And that group even attempted to build Heritage USA - a THEME PARK - at the height of their popularity! Just imagine if they had social media and the internet in the mid 80s to extend the PTL brand out even further.

But we know how that all turned out in the end. Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's downfall was swift and punishing, and deservedly so.

Camping's gonna need every single one of those pennies to defend himself against all of the lawsuits and FCC fights that are inevitably coming his way. It's not gonna be a pretty sight.

Six p.m., local time, May 21st, the appointed date and hour have already come and gone in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and China. I dusted off my old shortwave receiver to hear what might be up. Nothing much; business as usual. No Massive earthquakes, no graves thrown open, no Jesus coming in the clouds, no flocks of the 'elect' flying up to heaven. The only excitement I heard was over an Australian soccer match, and a Japanese radio game show.

Years ago I heard a recording of someone who cranked called Camping about donating a Dodge Demon for church purposes. As I remember it had Camping talking in circles. Kind of funny.

I thought Heritage USA was a motel as well (??)

If nothing happens, Harold Camping can just get off the air, return KFRC to 610 and put 1550 to rest, if not back to KYCY.

If the guy wasn't joking, Camping should have taken him up on it. The "Demon" was Dodge's version of the Plymouth Duster - not made since the 70s. While hardly a "classic" (just a sporty looking Valiant or Dart) it would be a collector's item and worth some good money.

While the Duster was a hit, I remember hearing at the time that the Demon wasn't selling - presumably because people didn't want to own a car associated with Satan.

...what if it turns out Camping is simply an A's fan who doesn't want the Giants to sweep this weekend's series? ;D ...

There was a 20-something story hotel that was mostly built, but never finished because of the PTL Club's implosion. It languished unoccupied for nearly twenty years, but recently was purchased by MorningStar Ministries, restored and completed as a conference center/hotel.

No ManCow did not get fired, as a matter of fact, that stunt propelled him to #1 in the mornings and soon left for Chiacgo. The stunt was in somewhat protest of then President Clinton holding up planes from taking off and landing at an airport (SFO?) because he was on Air Force One receiving a haircut. The stylist couldn't go on the flight, so they had to wait until the haircut was complete. KYLD did pay a hefty fine, they had to pay for a two or three day period, all the tolls of the crossing vehicles across the Bay Bridge.
