Have you seen the Judgement day Billboards that 610 AM is posting around the bay

....good morning, this is KGOD, the voice of God all the time. KGOD transmits on an assigned carrier frequently, with all the power we want...

Actually, Camping says the 'elect' will be raptured at 6:00 p.m., Pacific Time on the 21st (how's that for precision?), immediately followed by enormous earthquakes, so perhaps the closing sked should be-- 6:00:01-- All Shook Up --by Elvis Presley, followed by-- Make the World go away by Ray Price.

Scott: I think the difference in our two time-table scenarios is this: Prior to 100 years ago, this "end times" view was held, and promulgated by what a large part of the population regarded as fringe groups, organizations to be avoided.

Points well taken - but it still seems to me your perspective may be somewhat skewed by the area where you live and the folks with whom you tend to associate. I'm not at all convinced that the current-day end-timers are anywhere near as mainstream as you think they are, and at least up here in my corner of the country, I don't think the end-timers of the 19th century were as fringe as you make them out to be.

In the circles in which I travel (and on this board, too) it's hard to find anyone who sees Camping and his followers as anything much more than a fringe, and I don't think the failure of his prophecy, assuming that's what happens, will have anywhere near the negative impact on the overall perception of religion that you seem to think it will.

This article is what interests me (the atheist groups putting up billboards mocking Family Radio's billboards). Camping's behavior is made-to-order for these atheist groups... especially after May 22, when they could easily put up billboards mocking Camping & Co. for lying to listeners and followers.

And still, I betcha that after all is said and done, Family Radio will still hold onto KEAR, and their ministry will not experience and financial downturn whatsoever. Heck, Ralph Gordon "Brother" Stair continues to blather about the end times from his South Carolina compound, and people STILL donate to his alleged ministry in spite of his beyond-bizarre actions (which make Camping look like Mr. Rogers).

Why not loop REM's "It's The End of the World As We Know It" for 24 hours preceding the supposed end time?

My personal preference would be any combination of the following songs: Roy Orbison's "It's Over," the Spaniels' "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight," Phil Collins/Genesis' "Throwing It All Away," *N-Sync's "Bye Bye Bye," or The Doors' "The End..."

How about REM losing my religion can that help?

If Mr. Camping strongly feels that the end is coming in May then I am sure he wouldn't
mind handing over your radio stations, all of his personal income and property to me...put your money
where your mouth is (Say Amen)

OK how about another scenario 610 AM gets taken over by KDIA AM 1640 and 1190AM from Vallejo is that the Judgement Day on May 21st.

I clearly recall in 1994 hearing the good reverend Camping on KGO's Ronn Owens Show saying that he was absolutely certain that the September date he set for the Great Judgement Day that year was true. No margin of error, as he has admitted in previous date setting attempts. That's because, as he said, he did the calculations himself, based on his interpretations of previously undetected numerological double meanings obsure Biblical passages. Classic cult behavior, especially if the God you're claiming to represent is made in your own image.

I don't recall there being much talk or fuss over him, much beyond the 15 minutes he got on KGO back then. Camping scoffed to me as I attempted to call his bluff with my employers' letterhead invitation to turn over a selection of his Northern California licensees to the non-comm station I represented at the time, to show in earnest that he was for real.

Biggest difference today, I suppose, is the extra media attention from internet and cable TV gossipers hungry for a scandalous topic. Sadly, the date will come and go and probably nothing much will happen to the Family Radio empire. Can't say the same for those of his followers who are gullible enough to have their savings fleeced by this false prophet.

It would be cool, however, for someone to hack into Family Radio's transmission lines (could that be illegal?!) to play 20 minutes of the songs brought up on this board at 6pm Pacific time (how convenient tthat God keep to an hourly clock for West Coast drive time) on that date. Now THAT would be newsworthy.

The same bilboards are all over here in San Diego. KECR 910 AM. Family Stations of course. Man I am shaking in my boots for the hundredth time

I'm not worried....but just to hedge my bets, I'm hoping God accepts Judgment Day conversions. ;D

Didn't Mr Camping own FM 106.9 KEAR at some point before CBS used it for Free FM and KCBS 106.9?

Yes he did. That is why he now has 610am. CBS had to dump 610am in order to gobble up KOVR 13 in Sacramento. So CBS sold 610 and bought 106.9.

I had no idea this 2011 Judgement day prediction was mentioned in other cities in the USA I thought this was just a Bay Area issue since Mr Camping is based in Oakland and his flagship station is on 610 am. I also heard that Mr Camping had 97.3 FM in the 1970's until KRQR and later Alice took over the 97.3 spot in San Francisco. This mean that KFRC can get 610 back and KEAR will flip to 1550 on May 21st if thats what it really is. Family Radio show us the rating and financial records.

That's not quite accurate. My memory probably isn't perfect either, but here's how I recall it:

KMPX was originally at 106.9 when it was one of America's first "underground" album rock stations in the mid-late 1960s. At some point, they switched with 97.3. So I'm guessing that it was KMPX that made the switch with Camping. In the early or mid 70s, KCBS-FM, which was at 98.9 - made the switch with KMPX at 97.3, which by then had a "Big Band" (standards format). The justification at the time was that CBS wanted the stronger signal at 97.3, and was willing to pay for it. CBS-FM had an Oldies format at the time. John Mack Flanagan was one of their DJs.

So it was KCBS-FM that made the switch. This was a few years before the format change to The Rocker (KRQR), and even more years before Alice.

I thought it was a three way switch? I don't think KMPX was ever on 97.3? I think KMPX switched to Big Band in 1972 or 1973 so 106.9 was Big Band during most of the 1970's. DJ Boss would know more than me.

It was indeed a 3 way switch.

CBS had 98.9 with it's inferior signal, and wanted to improve it. But they wanted to remain near the center of the FM dial, not off on the edge as they would if they had simply traded frequencies with KMPX (106.9).

So CBS persuaded Family Radio to move to 106.9, then moved KCBS-FM to 97.3. KMPX wound up on 98.9 under new minority ownership, financed by CBS.

All 3 moves took place one evening after midnight accompanied by a massive shuffling of phone lines and studio remote control units between the 3 entities.

The 106.9 transmitter and antenna were antiquated and in pretty bad shape (a 5 Kw transmitter feeding a horizontally polarized antenna via a transmission line that leaked air and water like a sieve) so Family Radio went dark for a couple of weeks while they installed new transmitters and a new antenna.

Haven't seen any of Camping's billboards around here, where he owns WCUE/1150. Maybe he's got some up in Cleveland.

On May 22, I want to flip WCUE back to its Top 40 format of the late 70's and early 80's, for nostalgia reasons. ;)
