HD Local News Broadcasts (finally) on the way for the Bakersfield market

Well then, drop on down to Phoenix where we are constantly reminded of news in HD, News in HD! and NEWS IN HD!!!!! throughout the broadcast day.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, HD has done absolutely nothing to enhance newscasts with the possible exception of showing the expertise of the Talking Head's makeup artists and their amazing ability to cover imperfections and wrinkles.

Presentation over content. Same old, same old. :mad:

All five stations in Phoenix have HD news, and none of them are better for it. In fact, the endless "____ News in HD" mentions are extremely annoying. Note to stations: Every station has it here. It's not an exclusive feature.
 
Yesterday marked the launch of Bakersfield duopoly KBAK-CBS29/KBFX-FOX58's new set, and what was purported to be their state-of-the-art HD news broadcast.

While the new set is indeed a nice improvement, they should be ashamed for trying to pull the wool over viewers eyes, as their newscasts are *not* in HD, but rather what they refer to as "digital widescreen." Shame shame shame... In other words, they seem to have taken their standard definition broadcast window, and have artificially stretched it out to fill the full aspect ratio of HD screens. Not sure who they think they're fooling, but it really is not a quality picture at all. It's very evident what they've done.

As much as I dislike the dark bars on the side of an HD screen (when the programs aren't in full HD format), I would much rather see KBAK/KBFX return to that format so at least the main picture image of their news broadcast would remain as crisp and clear as possible. Few things suck more than trying to watch a stretched out, low-quality SD image on a full HD screen! It literally hurts the eyes.

So the Bakersfield TV market remains without a true HD news broadcaster, and I will continue to enjoy full HD news programs from the Los Angeles TV market until then.

I'm sitting here laughing so hard I can hardly type. For those that have been in Bakersfield for any length of time, think back to the 80's when they had 3 or 4 FM Signals total. For Bakersfield to finally get an Actual HD Newcast I'm betting that it will be near 2011 or 2012 before that happens for even one station.
 
KBFX 58 doesn't broadcast any HD programming at all, not even the FOX feed, It's all 480i, but it is in wide screen 16-9 though.

Only via cable and ever since Syndex rules applied, the few LA channels Bakersfield does get are massacred by Syndex blackouts. For the most part, the LA channels only light up for the local LA news.

KCET has a low power relay K46II-D but other than that no other LA signals permeate Bakersfield proper OTA.
