"HD Radio Coming to an MP3 Player Near You?"

"HD Radio ramping up competitive efforts"

"And perhaps the most significant announcement was that iBiquity envisions the HD chipset built into MP3 players, PDAs, eTablets, and Smartphones. They expect to make announcements around 2008."

iBiquity probably doesn't even realize that iPods will never have built-in FM-tuners ! Lots-of-luck - analog remote FM-tuners are $50 for the iPod and reviews have been mixed ! :D

How the freakin' hell do you know Ipods will nevr have fm tuners? MOST mp3 players have fm tuners.

Steve Jobs a little over a year ago said Apple would NEVER make a telephone. NEVER! I have NEVER heard Apple say the Ipod would never have a tuner. Nor have I heard them say it would never record audio, never record video, and never come with the freakin' cables needed to play it's content on a tv. That's just what it SHOULD do to ever offer value comparable to the media players that smart people (as opposed to Apple buyers) own. As countless reviewers have noticed, if consumers were actually informed about what's available from other manufacturers, Ipod would be 100th, rather than 1st. It's as if they take pride in offering consumers less, and charging more for it. But I suppose that's an Apple tradition. For many years their computers have lagged behind the performance of PCs (I'm not talking about operating systems...yes OSX is great). Now that they use the same platform as Windows PCs, it's easy to see just how screwed Mac customers are getting (as much as twice as expensive for comparable hardware. And yes I KNOW the OS is great, but is it twice as good as Windows?)

If only consumers bought what's best rather than what's best-marketed, we'd have used Betamax VCRS all these years, and cars would get 70 miles per gallon.

"And yes I KNOW the [Mac] OS is great, but is it twice as good as Windows?"

;o) Betcha it doesn't hold a candle to a recent implementation of Ubuntu....... ;o)

"Mixing MP3 and FM Radio: Maybe, Maybe Not: Of Those with Built-in FM, Many Radios Get Dinged"

"I've also been struck that many, many reviews on sites on which users can add comments have professionals rating radio reception as good (or at worst, "good for strong stations") and ordinary buyers giving radio capabilities a big thumbs down."

"Apple's Jobs Taps Teen IPod Demand to Fuel Sales, Stock Surge"

"The iPod had an 82 percent share of the market in U.S. retail stores in the 12 months ended in August, up from 64 percent in the same period a year earlier, and 33 percent two years ago, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD Group Inc."

"Will iPods feature FM tuners? Nope."

"The odds of this happening are zero."

http://www.hear2.com/2007/04/will_ipods_feat.html

Even if HD Radio were to make it built-in in the 18% of MP3 players, outside of iPods, consumers give the FM-tuners a "big thumbs down".

FM IS THE MOST REQUESTED FEATURE ON MP3 PLAYERS! Which is why EVERYBODY who doesn't have their head inserted in a seemingly impossibly way elsewhere on their body but Apple incorporates fm on their devices.

And that figure for "mp3 players" obviously doen't include things like mp3 boomboxes, car stereos that play mp3, pdas, cell phones, and the millions of other devices that play mp3 AND FM radio IN ADDITION to their other primary function. It's for STRICTLY POCKET, DEDICATED mp3 players. Apple dominates that market, but it's a FRACTION of the total market for portable devices which play compressed music formats, MOST OF WHICH ALSO INCORPORATE FM!

I-Pods won't have chairs either, so does this mean that chairs will stop being produced? Wha a desperate analogy. I-Pods are in the same catagory as the discman, or the portable cassette machine. They have nothing to do with radio.

Not only do they have nothing to do with rado, RF, but if this guy hates radio so much, is certain there will be NO MORE RADIOS IN FUTURE DEVICES, why the hell does he hang around radio discussion groups? Why doesn't he freakin' go chat about Ipods and Iphones in an APPROPRIATE forum...a forum FOR THOSE DEVICES? Is it that much fun taunting a bunch of radio people, telling them their life's work is useless, and they have no future? To REAL radio people that's actually more amusing than infuriating, because it ain't like we haven't heard THAT before!

History lesson: Radio always morphs to suit the changing (media) environment. It's in the process of doing that NOW (as always).

I assume that you are referring to me - I have been listening to SW and AM for 40 years, and listen to WLW, WBBM, WSB, and WABC every night. I just hate HD/IBOC.

HATE is an awfully strong word. Do you really HATE IBOC? I mean if you don't care for IBOC that's one thing and perhaps you can state your reasons why? Is it that your station is being interfered with? Are you a WTRI fan? employee? owner? Strictly speaking in my 51 years on this planet I have met quite a few people I don't like, but HATE? That's such a strong word, its saved for groups like the Nazis and the KKK and terrorists who kill innocent people. I can't imagne that you really HATE IBOC, but I've seen stranger things in my life. It apparently has caused harm to you beyond QRM to your hobby. No, I'd say this is a fixation of yours and one which is beyond your ability to control. That's pretty sad actually.
