If these units weren't selling, there would be no reason for these companies to spend the money to produce new radios.

It's called CAPITILISM and if these companies didn't jump on the HD bandwagon others would have... it means nothing to the consumer if they're not buying at least not in the millions Ibiquity, HD Radio Alliance, and the pro-hd types on these boards and others would have you think!

Just because you bought a radio and you know Clouseau and Mike and perhaps several others is not the ARBITRON of consumer buying habits!

One question.... WHY?

If these companies didin't feel there was (or was going to) be a demand, WHY WOULD THEY MAKE THE RADIOS?

Why would they care if their competitors made these radios?

You're right... It's called CAPITALISM. As in "Profit Motive" based. If a sufficient number of radios are not sold, there is no profit.

Manufacturers making the radio demonstrates BELIEF in the product. At least it does to me.

"Capitalism" is about PROFIT! It's as simple as that. I produce a product, and sell it for more than it cost to make it. I then pocket the profits, hare them with stockholders, and re-invest...hopefully in the NEXT profitable product.

Let's see AM stereo portables, Mr. Microphones, etc. the list goes on and on on useless gadgets the electronics industry have manufactured and now have a problem in the landfills of America...

So yeah there's always a sucker willing to buy anything.. doesn't mean the majority of the American public are lemmings when it comes to consumer purchases!

AM stereo is still made...still installed in new cars, and Mr. Microphone was one of the most successful products in Ronco history. They sold millions of the damn things! Worthless? Maybe. But to a 12 year old in 1975, it was fascinating!

By the way, the American market sure isn't the only market. C-Quam AM Stereo is extremely popular, and profitable in much of the world. Japan, with a very limited FM band, LOVES AM stereo, and new radios sell extremely well there. There's an ENORMOUS market for pocket AM stereo radios in Japan. Because of this, i was able to mail-order my neat little Aiwa pocket AM Stereo radio, which was never sold in the US.

Again, without the knowledge to back up your claims, you have accidentally given as examples of "failure", two EXTREMELY successful technologies. Call Motorola and ask them if C-Quam was a money-losing proposition! Many transmitters TO THIS DATE come with AM stereo standard.

Almost without exception everything you and I own will become obsolete. That's not the point we were discussing. We were discussing WHY WOULD THEY PRODUCE THE RADIOS?

Why did they produce the Mr Microphones? Because they thought someone would buy them.

Why are they producing the HD radios? Same reason.
