HD Radio reception is terrible in cars/trucks

Well I decided to upgrade my truck radio to a HD Radio, took it on a road trip, and the HD Reception started to drop out about 35-40 miles out of Austin! After that it was all getting to much static. I put back in my factory radio. The radio sounded great, but as far as reception it was not good at all! Usually in most cases on my factory analog radio I can pick up Austin all the way about 70 miles out. I think in the HDRadio commercials that they play about the Ipod tagging etc... they need to include "reception works well within 15 miles of the tower"

If it don't pick up than it doesn't help me at all.

Well, alright. Guess I won't invest my $120 for the JVC HD car stereo at Fry's Electronics then.

If your in the city most of the time, than it might work out good, but if you travel in the fringe // distant and local areas like I do than it won't be worth it. I did like the USB slot but I mostly listened to FM.

I have a friend who has an HD radio in his car (an Insignia), and we took it for a test drive about 18 months ago. I have to say that it worked reasonably well. Granted, he lives in Springfield, MO, where you don't have as much garbage to get in the way as you would in San Antonio and Austin. However, we were able to get the Joplin stations in HD, including the subchannels, after just getting 16 miles out of Springfield, which put us 57 miles from the transmitter. We were also able to get KTXR HD-2, which he listens to religiously, as far away as Monett, MO, which is also about 57 miles from the transmitter.

The only problems I noticed were that there were occasional drops around downtown Springfield, and there were also several drops between Monett and Aurora, MO. However, they were very brief (the station came back before you could hit the button to change the station) and not nearly as obnoxious as the picket fencing you get of analog stations. I can see how this could be a problem in the bigger cities, though.
