HD Radio To Blame For Pistons' Move From WDFN To The Ticket?

A spokesperson for the Detroit Pistons admits that HD radio interference from adjacent stations to WDFN (1130 AM) at night may have played a factor in the team moving their games to WXYT (97.1 FM/1270 AM) a couple of years ago:

“That was one of the components... They had a weak signal and we were getting a lot of people that could not hear us. It could have been HD Radio, but at the time we were totally unaware of it.”

That may have been a factor but I'll bet it was a very minor one. In all likelihood most Pistons games will be on 1270 while Red Wings games (when the two are on at the same time) will be on 97.1. CBS probably offered the Pistons a bit more money and were able to further consolidate their hold on local professional sports.

Hopefully this has minimal impact on Westwood One national football coverage.
 
You'd think the Pistons would want an FM home for sure. The other teams in Detroit are on FM now.
 
The Pistons have been on 97.1 The Ticket for two years now. When there are scheduling conflicts (i.e. Red Wings or Tigers), the Pistons air on 950 WWJ.

Roughly half their games air on 97.1; the other half air on WWJ.

1270 simulcasts 97.1 during Pistons games only when there is nothing else scheduled. If you go to Pistons.com, you will see 1270 is not even formally listed as an affiliate.

If there are three teams playing at the same time, it is not out of the question for the Pistons to be heard on WOMC. It's happened once or twice before.
 
WDFN at the time was firing everyone, all the local talent was let go, the first was Stoney and WoJo, and Sean B, I think at the time they kept 3 people, one was Marti Martin and they outsourced someone to do the traffic and weather, the station was ran automatically like most AM'er talk stations these days.
WDFN signal is terrible, but it's been like that for years.... they should have abanded the AM band many years ago and FCC should have alllocated new true digital stations where the old analog station were 76 Mhz - 86 Mhz would have been perfect, with either 24KHz bandwidth or 48 KHz Bandwidth, either one would provide a few hundred pure digital broadcast stations, and forget about HD Radio.
 
I don't get it. A move to an FM is to make sure that only those in the very local Detroit area can haer the games?
What about Ypsilanti, etc? They're not Pistons fans?
 
Ypsi should have no issue hearing Detroit's FM's but your point is well taken. The Pistons should seek additional affiliates to cover areas near Metro Detroit that could receive AM no problem but not FM.

The night signals for 1130 and 1270 were never great anyway even before HD radio.
