Yesterday, during the 5 PM top-of-the-hour newscast on WOR in New York, during both commercial breaks, I heard - not one, not two, but three different spots for HD Radio. Yep, two of them ran back-to-back in the first commercial break, and the third one followed a 30-second spot for another advertiser.
I wonder, how much money does a 50,000-watt blowtorch like WOR command for a commercial during their newscasts, specifically in a "drive time" hour like 5 PM? I can imagine how much iBiquity spent on that sale. Of course, WOR has an HD channel on its AM frequency... but three spots during the 5 o'clock newscast? Either it's generous make-goods for iBiquity, or WOR is desperate. Usually, I'll hear HD Radio commercials at the tail end of spot loads, but never in the middle of a newscast. Something is definitely fishy here.
