Heard Miami Radio Stations on Houston Stations? What happened?

I live in Bryan/College Station, and listen to 97.9 the Box and Majic 102.1 out of Houston all the time, but today I turned to 97.9 and heard a Country Station from somewhere else, then I turned to Majic 102.1 and heard a station out of Miami. What is going on? Its crazy! This was a few hours ago, and they are still like that.

It's not crazy, it's called tropo or eskip, i forget which and frequently happens in the summer..

Here in Houston I was receiving stations from Tampa Bay...

Magic 94.9 WGET?, 96.9 (sounded like mix), Max 98.3 (sounded like sunny), 103.5 (Country).

Around 2p was coming in like a local.

Well, actually BOTH can happen in the Summer, especially along the Gulf.

But, in this case, it was a massive Sporadic-E opening, as signals were returned to Earth via the E-later of the ionosphere. This opening was wide and strong. FL was heard from Texas, through the Midwest. Here in Memphis, I was getting South Floridians in HD. My first HDs via "skip."

Enjoy; this is fun stuff.

Fun stuff indeed. While driving on I-12 then I-55, I was enjoying skip paths almost at right angles to yours: South Carolina to Baton Rouge, then North Carolina to Hammond, LA and finally Virginia to Jackson, MS.

That is facinating, and exactly how it should work. We were using the same "cloud" inside the E-layer (thought the cloud was moving a bit); note the midpoints come close to intersecting.

This illustrates this as a "skip" event, as opposed to a tropo ducting event.

On the ham bands, this opening was off the hook; but, that's a bit extra-topical here.

Wow, just today, I heard Magic 98.9 FM here in Houston during lunch. Pretty impressive since it beat out KODA's HD hiss.
Now, my only conclusion is KKMG from Colorado since they did say "numer one ......(then hiss hiss from KODA's HD) in Spring"

I was getting skips all Sunday afternoon cant count them all! But I liked 105.9 Rock out of Orlando, that sounded pretty good, also heard some good classic rock on 98.9 from somewere. 95.5 also had a good classic rock, but I didnt get the call signs of them.

Another nifty tool for identifying DX is yes.com, particularly if you can log songs/artists vs. time, and have a guess what market the skip is coming from. During Sunday's SkipFest it helped me separate 96.1 Virginia Beach, VA (alt-rock) vs. 96.1 Charleston, SC (alt-rock).

I know several folks who use yes.com, and they give it rave reviews for DX IDs.

I didn't get quite so in-depth. Most of the stations I IDed were running HD, so call letters just popped up on-screen. Easy. What was odd, though, was 106.7, as Miami and Orlando were fighting it out; the calls on the display kept changing!

I've heard South Florida here in Houston many times. It is at the right distance for E-skip conditions. WCMQ 92.3 in metro Miami is a pretty good marker for such reception--the Cuban/Latin oldies are pretty easy to spot. Also look for stations in the Tampa Bay, Fort Myers, and Orlando areas when the band is open in that direction.

During such openings, I've checked frequencies where Havana, Cuba FM's operate, but no luck so far. Once had a few snatches of what I believed to be a station in the Bahamas, but was unable to get a clean ID.

Nice to occasionally have some good ionospheric conditions while we're at the bottom of the current solar cycle.

Yes Sunday around here in Tampa was crazy as well. I had 3 and 4 stations on one frequency swapping in and out @ a time while driving around here. Nothing solid enough to get a call or anything from it.
