Henry Gibson, original "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" regular, dies at 73

Re: Henry Gibson, original "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" regular, dies at 73

Another familiar (and beloved) face from the boob tube of my youth is gone. (sigh)

Agreed Stanislav. Henry Gibson seemed to have such a gentle demeanor; not just in Laugh In, but in the numerous movie roles that he had over the years.

Our sympathies to his family and friends....

He was wonderful in "Boston Legal" and "The Blues Brothers".

RIP

He's in my all-time favorite movie, "The Blues Brothers" as the head of the "Illinois Nazis" that Jake and Elwood tormented so. I also remember him from "Laugh-In." Another good one gone...

I was glad to see him in other roles, but it was weird seeing him in roles outside of Laugh-in. Come on, Don Knotts didn't do Shakespeare, and it was odd even seeing him as Mr. Furley! :)

I loved his performance in "Nashville" as the stuck-up country star dissing the hippie sideman.

He was an excellent actor. Genle demeanor aside - I can't remember the movie or the role, but I remember him playing a menacing creep on at least one occasion - very chillingly and effectively, despite the fact that he was a small in stature.

From what I read, he was IRL a very kind, gentle, and lovable fellow -- the sort that you can't imagine ever having an enemy. That may be why he enjoyed playing some of the roles cited -- actors love the chance to do a part where they can go 180 degrees from their real-life personality. It often works out well that way -- an actor can observe and exaggerate things in a personality type that someone actually of that type would be blissfully unaware of. (It's also why you usually have to be sober to really play a convincing drunk...) <s>

In that vein, I remember reading that when they were starting production on the sitcom Double Trouble, the Sagal twins, who had very different personalities IRL, started out to more or less play themselves. But they soon found the results were better and funnier when they swapped roles, because each could play a more overt, exaggerated caricature of the other.

...small in stature sometimes helps in playing the bad guy. Remember Michael Dunn as Dr. Loveless on The Wild Wild West?...
