Herald article on dearth of women in local talk radio

http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=129766

"Talk radio may be the final holdout, the last media arena to become populated by women. If you exclude a few syndicated female voices originating in other cities, WTKK-FM (96.9) talker (and Herald columnist) Margery Eagan is it for major Boston stations. Some say it’s time for that to change.

Julie Kahn, market manager for Boston’s Entercom-owned stations including WRKO and WEEI-AM (850), says she was taught somewhere along the line that listeners, including women, want to hear male voices. But Kahn says that’s an antiquated idea.
Entercom is conducting focus groups and other research on WRKO. While it’s early in the process, Kahn says the station ‘‘might find an appetite” for a female voice. ‘‘We absolutely would be open to that kind of thing.”

"Some say it’s time for that to change." Who would that be?

There is a dearth of females on garbage trucks too. Seriously, it's a tough racket and tough listen, regardless of who is behind the mike. IMO a good voice and quality calls are the difference maker for me, I can only take so much of talk radio, even under the best of conditions.

Now Almo, that kind of language got Lawrence Summers at Harvard into trouble.

Dear Boston Herald:

We've heard of nepotism before, but some of the writers at your paper
take it to new depths. Ms. Eagen isn't a bad read, but her diction
is downright horrible - and please don't give us the Politically Correct
point of view - Ms. Eagen should not be the representative of women on
Talk Radio. Nor should The Track Gals be either.

There are some excellent female jocks out there - Julie Devereaux on ROR ((Julie did a talk show on WNSH radio, a commercial station which just left the Endicott College campus) - I think it was on circumcision --- eeek!)),
Robin Quivers (formerly on WBCN) - Quivers being a very famous female
talk radio hostess.

But why no mention of WZLX's Common Ground hostess Kimberley Jaeger?
The former WROR on-air personality is truly a woman doing "talk radio"
on a 50,000 watt station - Sunday mornings at 7 AM.

What about Donna Halper on WJIB's "Let's Talk About Radio" ?

They certainly aren't spinning records.

Focus on those talented individuals - not the fact that a Boston Herald
writer is getting 1 hour a day on the air. My God, with Howie Carr
taking all the time to promote his book (isn't CBS suing Howard Stern
for promoting Sirius? Does Tom Reilly know what Howie's up to???),
wouldn't it be more prudent for The Herald to promote talk radio women
who are making a difference?

Thank you.

paging Marjorie Clapprood.. at least Air America/Jones network has some women piped into Boston.. Rachel Maddow, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Laura Flanders.. and, on the other side, Laura Ingraham, Dr. Laura... but why can't there be more women on Boston talk radio?

Janet Jeghelian (sp?)

and wasn't there a woman on WEEI originally with the Big O? I don't mean the Fabulous Sports Babe

doreen vigue? it's like having joseph gallant write a column in radio
and records. common, people. get real.

you mean janet p? http://www.aignerassoc.com/janet.html

weei had nanci d. the fabulous babe for a while until
they figured out that you can't program six hours of syndicated
talk in the morning block. she started every sentence with "Hey".
if you're selling yourself as a local sports talk
station in a big market, that ain't gonna work. maybe in peoria, but
not in boston.

The article is on women on talk stations, not every station on the radio.

That being said, the 2 Chicks Dishing was a great show.

whole thing reads like SOUR GRAPES

When will WKOXKS actually run a local show? No room for it?

. Rachel Maddow,

Laura I. can be pretty entertaining. usually on the "serious" side but tonight at the end of the show it was time for "Guess the Guest" (who's Larry King
talking to now??)

Bring on Deborah "Arnie" Arnesen who, last I heard, was canned up in
N.H. because car dealers wouldn't advertise on a show whose host
refers to SUVs as "F-U-Vs"...
______________

A rising tide lifts his boat. With appearances on OhReally, 60 Minutes, etc.,
his name gets out there. More listeners, more affiliates, etc.
______________
