My good radio friend Hercules Wells, passed away years ago. Wells worked at several stations in the Ark-La-Tex area, including KEES, KFRO, KZEY, KROZ-FM, KLGV, KCUL, and KMHT-FM in the Tyler-Longview-Marshall area, as well as KOKA and KMJJ-FM in Shreveport. He also worked at KYOK in Houston.
In 1991 in Gladewater, Texas there once was “Gladewater’s Downtown Radio” AM 1300 KNUT. It was a low power AM station with the shoppers in Gladewater as the target audience! I met Herc at that station. By chance I heard him on the radio and found the station at the top of the Wyche Drug Store building on Main St.
I loved radio then and now. I listened to and learned from the DJ’s at KYKX and once I heard them I was hooked with the radio bug. Although there was no position open at the station, Herc let me sit in on all of his shows. It was neat watching him do his DJ thing. I had the opportunity to sit in for about 6 months, then another DJ was hired, Rusty Bealls, formerly from KYKX. I sat in with him for about 3 months. He quit and I got my chance to run the station. I worked at that small station playing country until May of 1994. Herc really helped me in radio and taught me so much in that 6 months time. Now I want to give back to him. I’m a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and would like to nominate him. Does anyone know all the stations or some of them that he worked at and dates ? I have the above info but dates would be great! Thank y’all so much!
Sincerely,
Steve Young
