Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

Re: Heslam Blogs About Hub's Smackdown On EEI, Still Thinks WODS Is "Oldies 103"

On Let's Talk About Radio, Bob Bittner used to say older listeners got the brush off from advertisers, radio, etc. He said older folks would be more likely to pay for stuff like cars in full, in cash, as opposed to by CREDIT ("Rip up your credit cards. Most of the companies are evil"--Bittner). Heck no, they don't want THAT! They want credit-happy customers...

>>...and because you are "smarter about how we spend it," you are much less easily swayed by advertising

Trying to get people to be brand-loyal, but maybe older folks are set in their ways and are less
likely to try a diff. brand anyway?

My point is that there's a good amount of money sitting in a particular age group. They are spending money. It's up to smart advertisers to get at that money. These aren't just "older folks". These are the baby boomers. This is the still gigantic age group that has wielded an awesome amount of power for the past 50 or more years. What products do they spend money on? How about lawn tractors, upscale restaurants, luxury cars, Viagra, financial planning services, home repairs, alarm services and other things germaine to a certain financial and physical position in life. I realize that most companies are going for the not-too-bright younger people. I can't believe that Coors Beer actually makes a big deal out of their label changing color, would that make anyone change their brand of beer? They seem to think so.

The boomers are spending money and the companies that smart enough to recognize that it's still green are going to get some of it. I'd rather sell one Cadillac than 50,000 cans of soda.

you're only as old as you feel...

You are absolutely right, Art. (btw - I grasp the
reference of your pen name!) If you go by the
numbers only, I am over the hill. However, I do not
look/act like my chronological age. I was raised
on rock and roll, and can still out-party most of
the young 'uns out there! ;D ;D ;D

Helsam is easily the most spinnable reporter in Boston. Clearly the WBZ-FM story was spoon fed to her. The devil can cite demos for his purpose.

Unfortunately, they also let her babble about politics where she jumps merrily into the hip pocket of a few local spinmeisters with nary a thimbleful of thought.
