I didn't know about the substance abuse, I just remember years back when Pennington was first on some home improvement shows filling the role of the "young, cute, fit but compassionate and caring carpenter" to attract the female audience...Then I saw him on HGTV a few months ago and noted he looked and sounded like hell, and seemingly aged a lot.
