Hip-hop and rhythmic music on coasts vs. other parts of the country in '90s/00s

There used to be kind of a switch when visiting places like L.A. and NY as to some of the music you heard on CHR. For example, I think around 2007 or so I remember hearing Hypnotized by Plies in the daytime on KIIS 102.7 LA.But, I don't think they even spun it at night in KC (I don't know about mixshows.) But visiting a lot of towns, the more towards the coasts you got, the more rhythmic the product. Was there more of a cultural difference back then (now there still is.) I remember one announcer saying KC pop stations didn't even play Gangstas Paradise at the top of the charts when it was new! Small towns were an exception for some reason...you'd drive through one and the CHR a lot of times would play more of the hip hop. Were people on coasts more open to rhythmic product back then?
