MEXICO CITY, Jan. 17 — The long-running Mexican radio program Buenos Días, created by veteran broadcaster Héctor Martínez Serrano, aired its final episode on Saturday, ending a 50-year run on Grupo Radio Centro.
The program’s conclusion was not announced in advance. The broadcast proceeded normally for most of its duration before host Manuel “Manelic” Martínez, son of the show’s creator, confirmed the farewell during the final segment.
Martínez thanked members of the production team and Grupo Radio Centro for their support over the years, saying the program was ending “happy and satisfied” after more than two decades with the company.
Listeners reacted on social media, with several expressing disappointment over the lack of clarity surrounding the show’s future. Some questioned whether Buenos Días had ended permanently or might return on another station.
Buenos Días was founded by Héctor Martínez Serrano, one of Mexico’s best-known radio voices, who died on May 9, 2020, at age 86.
Born in 1933 in Celaya, Guanajuato, Martínez Serrano began his career at stations including XEY, Radio Fórmula and XEW, where he worked for three decades. He became widely known for his live coverage during major national events, including the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, when journalist Jacobo Zabludovsky delivered a phone report from the streets during Martínez Serrano’s program.
The show continued after Martínez Serrano’s death and remained a fixture of Mexican morning radio until its final broadcast.
